How Much Do You "Baby" Your TRADITIONAL Knives?

As many have stated, it really doesn't matter how one carries, uses, or otherwise may neglect his knife; what I do find highly unusual, and very suspect, are the sheer volume of uber high dollar knives ($400 +) that constantly show up in fotos here, and not a one shows so much as a dust particle. I've seen fotos of high dollar customs purportedly slicing a steak, but I'd be willing to bet dimes to dollars that steak was sliced by a common steak knife, and the deep pockets custom had a tad of blood juices swabbed onto the blade, but probably briefly, for foto purposes. Prove me wrong...show me your custom folders and uber expensive traditionals rode hard and put up nasty; let's see some Tony Bose knives cutting roofing shingles, or floor carpet. Let's see that elephant ivory clad Davidson field dressing a wild boar.:p

I have some users and some abusers. A nice traditional still goes in the pocket with the change but is used appropriately. As previously stated, its not a screwdriver or pry bar.

To date, I've seen no evidence that I can take them with me when I pass on...so, I see no point in babying them.

Finding the time to use them all is another matter, however. :D

This question comes up every once in a while.
The fact is that most folks take pictures of their knives when they first buy them, prior to use.

You'll have to trust me that I've seen lots of pictures of well used knives.

I carry and use every knife I own. I'm pretty nice to my knives tho, I keep an old buck in my boot for the more abusive things. I don't worry about scuffing the blade or knocking the edge off tho. What's a knife for if its not gonna cut things and need sharpened; and personally, given the choice between 2 blades, a brand new one and a well used one in good shape I'd take the latter

Every Knife I own was purchased to be a tool I could use, enjoy and count on in a pinch. I collect for my own enjoyment and fun. Having said that, if I ever come upon something truly precious, I'd be careful with it. Some things we kind of have a responsibility to take care of. Particularly if it is old and historic in some way. Just my two cents.

I just sprayed my 81 with Hoppe's lubricating oil and wiper it down with a patch and toothpick. Nice and clean.

I don't baby my Case 3375CV and my newly acquired 6375CV, they get used for their intended job function only. I just drop one of them for the day in my LFP all by itself; just easier for me to access it that way. I work for my City, in the Parks & Rec department and they get a good work out everyday Im out in the field. From cutting tons of moist mulch and top soil bags, nylon cords, straps and other job functions in a daily basis. They are out with me hours on in, either in rainy muddy conditions or in 95 degree weather with high humidity, but at the end of each day they get properly maintained.

So when it comes down to it for me atleast, scratches and the such on the knife is inevitable. If I was to baby and worry about a scratch, dent and such on my knife I would fall in a deep endless madness state lol.

I work in a casual dress office have recently been wearing some Dockers Crossover Cargo pants as they have a discrete zipper for the cargo pocket which is great for carrying my cell phone and that leave my right front pocket just for my traditional knife. I also do not carry any change so my keys are in the left pocket. Also I'm not really concerned about any wear and tear on my knife as that's what it is for - to be used forcreating found memories.

I only have 1 traditional that was a gift from a place of employment that i got about 15 yrs ago. I used it some but it has been sitting on a shelf since.

About 3 yrs ago or so, i started buying modern folders and ended up selling them off cause it was a bad time. Most of those that i sold, i did not want to use.

I kept 4 of those and i use them all the time. I do baby them some as they cost a decent amount. However i am slowly getting braver. The sad thing is i really only need a traditional for theuse that is currently needed.

I will continue to use my moderns, but I'm learning that i want to start getting some traditionals as they would get better use and possibly be more useful for my needs.

I have learned that if i have to baby or not use my knives then i do not need them. So i now only buy knives i plan to use. If i happen to not use a knife i buy, then it will move on to a better place. Just my thoughts
