I am looking into acquiring a Rockwell C Scale tester. For those of you out there that have one, What does one cost new and who makes a good one and what are all the parts needed to properly test the hardness of a blade?
Any websites of companies that make them would be appreciated. Thanks.

I purchased a used PTC 316 hardness tester for around $75. It is a portable type hardness tester but it tests the C scale and works quite well for blades I think. Scott

This one is really quite good. It is adjustable and accurate. You will need to purchase a couple of good test blocks for calibration, such as those made by Starrett or Wilson.

I purchased a AMES portable that was brand new in the box off of ebay, for about $400.00, these models are very accurate. I built a stand for mine, it takes some time to get used to but it dead on every time. This there website new models are very expensive http://www.amesportablehardnesstesters.com/PriceList.cfm

Edit to add:Make sure you are looking at the Model 1 or model 2, if it complete it should have a anvil, three test block ball penetrator and most important the Diamond penetrator. The s models are for superficial testing.

There is an Ames model 2 on e-bay for 79.99 but cant tell if it's complete and theres 3 days left.

Dumb question. on a hardness tester type that was posted from Grizzly industrial, how does that work? The blade is layed flat on the round table and then it's cranked by hand ? Or does the machine apply the pressure all by itself to make an indentation? Kinda have NO CLUE as to how things like this work.

$800.00 and up for a good one. C & B with all the test blocks for calibration. Check the one I have in my shop. The name on it is Rockwell. Have a great day in the land of knives. --------
