How much for Bear Grylls reproduction?

This may be a dumb question but why don't you just buy one from them.Second, I would dare say the overwhelming majority of makers here including myself do not do direct repro's or copies of other makers work.Dave:rolleyes:

$525 seems kinda hefty for that knife... but he does state that even the handle bolts are made in his shop.

Pretty interesting construction he's come up with.

$525 is a hefty. And I must clarify...I'm not looking for an exact copy just something similar in design but I guess we'd have to go into design details so nvm sorry. I just wanted to get an idea and if I got a reasonable price than I'd source it out rather than attempt it myself.or

Moderator you can end this thread now :)

How bout you sketch something you want, scan the sketch, provide the specs and ask if anyone is interested in making it? I'm sure a lot of us (me included) could use more work
I'm also reasonably sure nobody who is a regular here will directly rip off the design of another maker
or better yet make it yourself and ask us for help and advice. That's what this part of the forum is for.
I'd be happy to bid on building a knife, but it needs to have at least 3 substantial differences from any examples cited (material choice doesn't count)

I don't see why a knife of similar dimensions and style would be wrong to produce. Since it is common type of knife, It would be easy to find a maker that could offer an original twist on the design.

Like most knives this one really has nothing new. Even the one piece guard and full tang. I made one of those a little while ago before I had ever saw this guys stuff, and mine was on a dagger. But, you will find most makers are just like those above and will honor a craftsman and not make a copy of his "brandname" knife for lack of a better word. If the craftsman were to say go ahead have fun they would. Unless of course the guy made something as common as a 4" drop point hunter. If you would have asked for a knife something like that only made or 1084 somebody probably would have said ok because the size and shape is pretty standard. They might built it a bit thicker or deeper, longer/shorter a bit more of less drop on the tip. different guard and handle bolt, some what better. some what worse, but, NOT THE SAME especially when you bring the guys name into it.

The running joke about Bear Grylls is that the easiest way to get his knife is to steal it off of the room service tray.:D

Not sure I see the point of the design but its great he can get that kind of money for a pretty simple knife. I think if I was going on a survival trip I would take something a little bigger, tough to chop much with that.

Thats what he has teeth for:D.

WAIT... does that page say the knife is heat treated to increase stain resistance? I was not aware that heat treating could transform an easy rusting carbon steel into a stainless. While I am sure that knife is stainless I don't think it got that way from the heat treat.

I have tried the serrated edges and they work great on rope or green branches but if I had to cut firewood for a few days I still would take something bigger. I must admit I saw him cut some branches in a show and I was impressed, I got the impression he is pretty strong.

i saw the ht as well, I have heard that some steels get more stain resistant when ht, but they were stainless

If I am reading correctly, he is using RWL stainless, which I think is similar to CPM154

i would also be interested if there is a maker out there that would do this for me, although i would change a couple things.
maybe that would change some minds about copying.

thanks everyone

There are lots of great Bushcraft/Survival knives made by people on this forum in the makers section that you should check out. I just got a very nice Bushcrafter made for me by Andy Roy of Fiddleback Forge. I love this knife! He does great work and charges a very fair price if you ask me. I love the design that he has and he let me pick out the scales. I paid a lot less than £425.00 for it. I would look around some of these makers and see if any of them have something that makes you happy.

This is interesting , over a year ago a childhood friend got in touch with me and sent a picture of that knife asking if I could do something similar for him . The design actually reminds me of an old Gerber style knife . When I finished making his knife , he said it was too pretty to carry and use . Guess I screwed up , but here is what I made him . D-2 steel
