Living in the coast range of Oregon, it is not uncommon to see the weather change drastically very quickly. I see people all the time on little day hikes with nothing but the clothes on their backs to protect them. I also see the SAR guys searching for them when their afternoon stroll in the woods turns into a survival nightmare.
Most people will never need a knife or survival gear. Those that do are sure happy when they have it.
Neither of these weighs enough for me to leave it behind. I don't even notice they are on my belt.
