How much lock stick is too much? UPDATE

I have seen the numerous threads that cover lock stick. But how much if any falls within the normal range? Should my small Sebenza be void of of any noticeable lock stick? I have a pretty new small Sebenza and there is a slight but noticeable sticking point you have to break through when disengaging the lock bar.
In comparison I have a Sage 2 with zero lock stick. When disengaging the lock bar you feel nothing. Lockbar tension is easy on the thumbs and smooth as can be. This is supposed to be an homage to the Sebenza but is some ways feels like an improvement.
I've seen posts where Sebenza owners have sent their knives back to CR and it came back with no lock stick. I've also seen posts where owners have stated the lock stick is normal. If any at all is normal than you would think CR would acknowledge rather than just fix?

Thoughts?

UPDATE:
So I just took apart my Small Sebenza to put my new lanyard on. I washed the scales with dish soap and hot water. I made sure I washed the lock bar/detent ball area well. I did the same with the blade/tang. When reassembling I place very minimal CR grease for the washers and that was it. After re-assembling it seems to have that smooth as glass feel and no lock stick. Im not sure what the difference in this take down was but this is the smoothest it has ever been! And so far the absence of grease has eliminated the lock stick. Knock on Wood!

I've had lock stick on a few of my CRK'S. Some weren't that bad as others. I think it comes down to what you want to put up with. I've had lock stick on a bunch of different brands as well. To me, a tiny bit isn't a big issue. It's almost considered an indicator of a good locking lock:)

I've never experienced lock stick that DIDN'T sort itself out with use, ie cycling it open/close a few hundred times.

I've heard of knives that NEVER got better even with lots of cycling...I've just never owned any like that.

Out of the box, there shouldnt be any stickiness whatsoever. Thats from both of my crks purchased from new. a 21 developed some stick when I realised that some of the grease has come in contact with the mating surfaces. Getting it totally clean and clear of grease/oils/fat is the key factor.

CRK's instructions on Sebenza maintenance say to put grease on the tang where the lock bar travels. Maybe you had some sticky gunk, like apple juice, on the the tang that you cleaned off.

Where are these instructions? I've heard people say yes put grease on the tang and I've had people say no that is the problem. ?????

Mine had a little bit of lock stick. Repetitive application of sharpie on the blade tang helped a lot.

Miso

I've noticed the lockup amount can change a bit depending on which way the stop pin is rotated. If the pin has been in the same position for a long time it will start to get worn and lockup may become a bit later. I would think though that instead of the lockup on yours getting later it was getting sticky instead (by not traveling farther).

May or may not be the case for yours but it's my guess...

Funny you say that. Stop pin may have rotated. Not on purpose. General lock up seems slightly earlier as well.

I see you fixed the stick...

Just wanted to add that mine has a very minimal amount, I mean it's hard to notice sometimes it's so close to zero.
(It's been taken apart a million times)

Stick is not necessarily a bad thing, and I actually prefer a very little bit...(see above for "VERY" little)
It lets you know that you have positive pressure where you want it.

Where are these instructions? I've heard people say yes put grease on the tang and I've had people say no that is the problem. ?????

Great question. Instructions with pictures are in a sticky thread above, but the pictures are now gone and the CRK moderators won't fix/maintain it. They say to put grease on the tang.

CRK used to have instructions on their website with pictures, but with the redesign of the site and/or the departure of Chris Reeve, the instructions are gone or at least I can't find them anymore.

Although CRK claims their knives are user serviceable, they have never given instructions for take down/cleaning of any other folder. To me its one of the mysteries of CRK knives, why design a knife to be user serviceable, and in the box give a wrench or two, grease, and locktite, but no written instructions in the box or Online video? To me it's the only thing that sux about CRK knives and their customer service. Kind of unfathomable as to their reasoning, but hard to believe it's not conscious.

Won't fix or maintain the instructions that were provided by owners and users in the first place?
To be fair, there are a few moderators of this forum, myself being one of them.. The other mods of this forum such as CRK Rep and Chris Reeve Knives don't come into this forum much for a few reasons..The biggest being that they have a job to do and focus their time doing said job unless their is something that needs the attention only they can provide. The largest portion of users here are mechanically savvy and along with a host of others, can provide this information and often do as the subject comes up.
Ironically, I was recently contacted by someone that would like to me to refresh those particular instructions. I will take care of this as time allows and a recent injury heals..and I will unsticky a few of the posts during the transition.
Your approach on issues needs some work if you want them to be solved. Rather than the passive-aggressive approach, why not simply ask or pm myself or one of the other mods? It's frustrating to see this approach from someone with the tenure here that you have.

I saved those original instructions in a pdf file that I could share, or a mod could post in a way that is accessible to all. It only covers Sebenzas, so something else would be needed for the 25/Inkosi and Umnumzaan.

Don-

That would be incredibly helpful! The procedure is close enough for now to translate to the others that you mentioned.

Thank you for your generous offer. I do have a request for the information from CRK, but this helps too!

Ok but I might not be back on my computer to get it for a day or two. Don't have it on my phone.

You are good Don..the instructions have been broken for awhile, they can go awhile longer.

Got it Don..Thank you so much!

Failure to provide instructions on take down and maintenance in the same box that CRK gives the tools and locktite for the job has nothing to do with this forum's volunteer moderators.

I know CRK has abandoned active participation in this forum awhile ago, which is a shame. Instructions on take down and maintenance from volunteers is a nice community service but wouldn't the best approach be "factory authorized" instructions? There is already enough misinformation about CRK products and their proper maintenance on the internet.

When asked for instructions on Tilock take down and maintenenace, CRK customer serviced side stepped the request by telling me to send in my knife and pay the service charge.

In the post, you stated "Instructions with pictures are in a sticky thread above, but the pictures are now gone and the CRK moderators won't fix/maintain it." Moderators, a function of this forum that you are participating in are included..Like it or not, those are your words which the vast majority will interpret to be myself and the other mods of this subforum.
As far as active participation and CRK go, there is a reason I am a moderator now. It's not always perfect, but I do convey major concerns and receive active requests as well as updates specific to this forum. Many times, the BF members get information before it's released elsewhere.
I do have requests for the information that you specifically asked for into Tim Reeve. I suspect he will get back with me as soon as he is able considering the long weekend. In the meantime, Don M has graciously provided me with a PDF to use or share with maintenance instructions from users who no longer participate here. In the next few days, I will get them posted up.. Likely, I will combine what time provides me with as well as the information from Don M.
(Thank you again Don M!)

I will send an inquiry to CRK for information on the Ti-Lock maint instructions. Not sure how long it will take, but I think I can get some information either way and post them.

Do me a favor as I think that you are not necessarily meaning to be passive-aggressive. You just have a different approach. It can take some time for me to see, but I will eventually get it. Start a new thread OR PM me with any concerns or requests you have. Honestly- I do respond. I want to help in any way I can, but I cannot read minds. If you are having an issue, keeping it a secret is not going to help.. Help me to help you. This applies to everybody here with questions.
If the need is urgent, call Chris Reeve Knives, Monday-Thursday. 208-375-0367
Alternatively, you can post a question in this forum. Most of the CRK regulars can and often do help..Their input and knowledge is valued very much!

It's about finding solutions over assigning blame.
