How Much More Chromium Does D2 Need to be Stainless?

From my (corroded) memory it needs only two percent points more, I usually say that its almost stainless :D

Surprised M4 has such a high PREN number. So does it just patina really easy but doesn't pit easily? Also surprised A2 was so much higher than 52100, not that 52100 does rust if there's any type of humidity but my limited experience with A2 was that it wasn't much better. Maybe there was some cross contamination of a belt with a carbon steel, since I know the maker uses 1095 also.

Good read, as I'm a fan of D2 for edge retention at a value. I've never actually chipped it either which always makes me wonder how much you have to beat on a knife to get it to chip. I think H1 and 8c14rMov are the only two I've chipped and both instances involved serrations and nylon ties.

Keep up the good work.

So is it just me or does every post on that blog pretty much directly or indirectly encourage you to go out and buy some AEB-L RIGHT NOW? :D

The pitting resistance probably only works with a minimum amount of chromium because the Mo supports the Cr passive film rather than being able to replace large portions of it.

What was the secret AEB-L message in this one?

LOL. Well, AEB-L is highly corrosion resistant in addition to being very tough. :D I'm not accusing you of shilling for B-U/Voestalpine. ;)

Great article as always Larrin :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I would be interested to know how given amount of Chromium effect the mechanical properties of steel. For example why added small amount of Cr to 1060 and it became leaf spring steel. What Cr do to elastic property?

I heard some amount of Cr added toughness to steel. All the steel considered to be the toughest are all seems to have high Cr content, S7, AEBL, A8, 3V etc. In the contrary, I also heard when added Cr to the point make steel stainless, it some times reduce touhness of them.

Would love to hear the truth about these subject and some explanation.
