There's a LOT of under-rated knives out there. ESPECIALLY if you're on a budget.
You could always post a question like, "I wish I could afford to buy a ______, but I only have $__ money. What's a good alternative?"
You'll get a TON of feedback that way! Sure, you'll get the _______ purists, saying that they're the best and there is no substitute, which is life on the forums, but there are plenty of smart people on here who understand knife performance and, frankly, ignore the marketing and can tell you, objectively, about a knife regardless of it's price & market positioning.
I ESPECIALLY agree with you about the magazine reviews. There's one mag in particular that sometimes puts an ADVERTISEMENT for that particular product on a facing page. Many times, if it's a new company, their first advertisement will be somewhere in that issue.
