How much sleep is needed?

I usually hit the sack early and will get a couple hours sleep. Then I'll wake up and be up for an hour or so. Then I'll sleep another couple of hours and wake up again. I do this all night till about dawn, then I'm up till I nap during the heat of the day in summer, or around 2pm or so during cooler weather. The nap is short, 30 mins or so, but revitalizes me for the rest of the day.

When outdoors, I usually sleep less for the first day or two. Too sore and tired, and it takes a bit to get 'comfortable'. But after the first couple of days, I can sleep eight hours or longer.

I don't like to eat just before bed, but that's the way it works out when backpacking. Hike 'til near dark, seek out a spot and set up camp, eat dinner, enjoy the stars for an hour, then it's to bed.

Sun comes up, break camp, hike a while, then stop for breakfast.
