Jus a hypothetical question but how much would you spend on a knife which has a 14 inch blade, 0.5 inch thick, 20.5 inch overall, mokume guard & pommel and parrying strip, blade differential tempered & made out of carbon steel, Hand carved sheath with mokume throat and chape????????

BTW if your wondeirng what knife this reminds you of it's a more elegant Musso Bowie.

All valuations welcome, btw i don't have it getting it made.

Many thanks, Pootsy

P.S. Blade is just forged, not pattern welded/damascus.

0.5" thick ?????? Each to their own but I would not not want a blade that thick. Why would anybody need one that thick ? I have to question if even a 0.25 " blade is actually needed, this is the thickest that I'd go to !!!

My thoughts exactly.

One might as well carry a hatchet!

It depends on who's making it. When buying a custom knife a large part of the value/price is the maker's name. Also, how much design work and planning the maker has to do.

Maybe a new maker wanting to try something new might make you such a knife for under a thousand dollars. But I bet an established and well-known maker would charge twice that.

Not with a 14" blade. maybee like a 7" blade with an extreemly high scandi grind. Even then it would have to be a pack knife, not a carryable one.

i'd love to carry it all the time lol,
the dude i've asked to make it isn't a really well known smith but he is a good one taught me and was brillaitn at pattern welding and well jus anything. He would charge me £700 so $1300:eek: or so. When he told me I felt the blood drain from my face. It's gonna be my 18th birthday present, turned 18 on Sunday so I want something special but I feel sort of duboius bout spending that much

If it was a well-known maker and of exceptional quality I can see that price being adequate. Otherwise I would have a hard time justifying it. I recently bought a blade for $700 from a well known maker that was .32 inch thick, and about the same blade and overall length that you are describing, that I think was an exceptional value.

You can get a NICE custom for under half of that, but if that's what you want, don't waste your money on a compromise!

Well if he hasnt made it yet, get him to slim the thickness down to about half of that and maybe that will cut down on the price and it will also make it more practical?

.2" should be sufficient, .5" is huge, I could lift cement slabs with that.

he's making it out of leaf spring steel, any ideas how good that is? And the thickness will prob be more 0.35/0.4ish. He's forging all the mokume too, what you all think too much?????????????

Just I want to get the best knife I can for my money.

I don't know, sounds still like a useless wallhanger to me. I understand that some collect knives that aren't being used, which wouldn't be my cup of tea but I can understand that in principle. But to collect a knife that is hardly USEABLE (0.35/0.4 is still HUGE and 14", you better have a lot to chop)......I wouldn't spend my money on. I mean with these dimensions it will pull your pants down if you ever decide to carry it.
Besides if it is heattreated properly, it hardly has to be this thick. And if the smith doesn't have name recognition, it may not have much value on a collectors market either. Dunno, wouldn't be my choice.

There is in principle nothing wrong with spring steel for a big chopper (actually, it seems like a pretty good choice), but then again it is neither difficult to forge (AFAIK) nor is it expensive.

It depend in width and grind, if it is like 3" wide with full flat grind even with 0.4" thick it will cut fine, with 14" length it will not bee too much ugly. It is small sword most likely. If it is 1" wide then it will be prybar.

There is an article about how to choose custom knife, it may be useful for you, it includes checking aftermarket for this knifemaker, how often he perticipates exibitions etc. Big checklist for exactely your case.

Thanks Vassili.

can you link me, he's a uk smith, one of very few, so there's not really many opportunitys to show off but I know he does go to shows and all which there is.

i'm going for a convex grind what you think?
Why is it so difficult to chose lol:D ?

Anyone give me any idea what someone like Don Fogg would charge for a knife like that? :D or should i just email him and ask him lol.

Alson what is spring steel like, like what other known steel does it resemble or is like 1050, 1060?

Many thanks,
Pootsy

Im having Matt Lamey make me a Bowie fighter out of 1095 12inch blade lot of distal taper for speed one guarter at thickest tapering way down one and three quarter at widest. beautiful. fast and alive in the hand. for $650. a steal. cut with any knife in the world. gorgous hamon. id go a thousand though i dont have it and have saved for years.
Sharper . lighter then a helles belles. heavy enough to go through a collar bone (i know. but if we are talking about a fighting knife) changes speed in a heartbeat.
1300 is a lot of money. but if you have it and its what you want.
Anyone not familiar with matt lamey please go to his websight. he has been wonderful to work with and fast . you just got to keep calling him.
I dont think his prices will stay this low the knives are just to functional and beautiful.
