How NOT to design a $499 pen.....

I own pens costing far more than $500 and unlike this pen from the infamous stealer of design my pens do not look like crud.

it makes sense to me.
why buy a custom knife when a production does the same thing.
why buy a rolex when a timex tells you the same thing
same with cars or whatever else you want to talk about.
craftsmanship and design its cool
its a option that is certainly not for everyone.

When we are talking pens w.r.t. veblen goods this is the last thing I would even consider.

A bali-fountain would be cool till ink flew all over the place. This thing is just completely unnecessary. 500 dollars, wow.

people with a lot of money though think different than normal people like me.

Awww man, I was just going to say that! I can just see this pen-grande going off in my shirt pocket! Elegant....no. Not only is it uglier than a sow in heat, I also believe the pocket clip to be a seriously flawed design.

Funny looking pen. I think a click pen is quicker and a tad cheaper :). Some times people like to reinvent the wheel except in this case the wheels were square :D

I'm all if favor of reinventing the wheel... but it's got to be an improvement.

The pen I've been using mostly for some time now was a gift from my younger brother; it's a Lamy and it's a "click" pen with the button on the end. But, when you press the button, not only does the writting tip emerge, but the pocket clip actually retracts into the pen's body! This prevents you from putting the pen back into your pocket with the tip exposed and saves the resulting cleaning bill. That is a useful and practical improvement.

I bet if someone other than Marfione had their name on this pen, the general attitude in this thread would be very different... I think it is a cool, interesting design, with cool, interesting materials. There are plenty of custom knife makers who also have done runs of custom pens that command similar prices. Doesn't seem outrageous to me.

Not true, for me at least. Tony Marfione has a very keen design aesthetic and tends to put out some very nice high quality products.

Brian Fellhoelter just came out with a very classy pen made of carbon fiber at around the $300 mark. That's more up my alley.

These Tony M. pens seem to be geared to people who are already fans of his work (they sold out quickly.... doubt I could sell a $499 that quick, if at all!). This gear usually gets flipped on forums after the original buyer gets bored with it and figures out it's not a very practical piece of gear. Big fan of titanium, carbon fiber, and overbuilt gear here....... just not fugly gear! :D

At least the background music matched the mechanism. Both were annoyingly intrusive and unnecessary.

Exactly what I was thinking. The music reminded me of trying to eat dinner in Mexico when the brass band keeps on playing at you asking for cash.

I might have been more polite, but the review would have been the same.

i agree

i still cant come to buy a new pen. i have had a black fisher space pen for 4 years now. and only on the 3rd ink refill. its smaller, easier to open, and $16

I saw these at NYCKS just as Brady was unboxing them. The mechanism just doesn't make sense- the lever acting as the pocket clip makes a great way for you to lose that $500 really quick. They don't have much resistance to open.

I hope there's enough tension on the clip.
The stupid video doesn't give you any indication at all with all the cheesy music in the background.

I immediately went out and bought 200 Bic pens for $500 after watching that video.

That thing is fugly fugly fugly. And looks impractical. But it is "tactical".
