How objective are people's advice on this forum?

I have noticed that Spyderco, (which I really like) and Buck (which I do not like) really do seem to have a "cult" folowing here.

And while I have nothing bad to say about Spyderco, except that I dislike liner locks in general, regardless of brand, I've noticed that posting anything negative about Spyderco or Buck is a quick way to get flamed.

Saying something negative about Buck seems to be ALMOST as bad as saying something positive about Cold Steel!:D:D:D:D

It doesn't matter to me at all if I get flamed for what I like and don't like. It doesn't bother me one bit. I would use a Cold Steel over a Spyderco any day. That's my personal preference. So go ahead, flame me! It's not going to make me give up a Cold Steel. Constructive criticism helps, but flaming people is pointless to me.

I don't see why you would be flamed for sharing that opinion. I've met some guys who really seem to know their knives and they love CS, good for them.

And that is your personal preference so it's not my right to bash you just because I don't agree with it. In return, I expect the same.

As for the OP, good riddance.

I couldn't agree with you more. Bottom line, if you ask for a recommendation on a knife then most likely people are going to recommend what they like and that very well may be a Spyderco. For my conscience sake, if someone recommends to me a knife brand that I do not like, then I feel that I should return the favor by at least looking at the knife.

Speaking for myself, when I recommend a knife or piece of equipment, I am speaking from 50 years of experience. I have tried most all the brands and even many custom knives. When I find a knife that performs as good as a knife that costs much more I am going to relate that to the person asking. If someone wants to spend 300-400 dollars for a knife he is welcome to do so but will that custom knife be eight or ten times better than a Spyderco or in my case, Kershaw? There ain't no way on this planet. A good sturdy knife and a way to keep it sharp will do you much better than trying to cut with a 400 dollar bill. Brains will save you long before equipment will.

When other brands offer as much knife for the dollar as Spyderco and Kershaw then they will probably be represented well too. I would add Buck and Gerber to the list as well as coold steel all of these knives have always given me what I paid for. Thats DARN high on my list when spending my hard earned money.

udtjim, do you have any experience with the Kershaw Roughneck? I have had my eye on it for a couple weeks now and wanted your opinion on it.

That is one I have not tried yet. I really like the Blackout as a rugged folder. I like the Leek for a slim light razor sharp knife. Sort of a Sunday carry. I have the big D2 Kershaw Outcast, what a chopper that one is. I have four Kershaw Blade Traders and two 8 inch bowie style Kershaws from about 15 years ago. I have sevaeal Chives and Scallions. My newphew has a Junk Yard Dog that he really likes. If I try the roughneck I will post a report.

I also have several Kershaw Kitchen knives and my son who is a Chef loves the Shun line.

For those complaining about supposedly getting "flamed" for just stating their opinions, most times it's how an opinion was presented, not that it was.

"thedawg" is a perfect example.

Most folks here on BF are glad to welcome various opinions, which reflect each persons experience.

But if it becomes very obvious right off the bat, that a person is not speaking from direct experience, but simply promoting an agenda or smear campaign, folks get riled up.

I'm very happy to see that quite a few folks share the opinion that one's experience should be shared, good or bad.:)

I guess I put up that earlier post because I have been flamed twice for sharing bad experiences with Buck knives. It was like I had committed some kind of blasphemy. :jerkit: And I was REALLY flamed, even called un-American for stating that I was very well pleased with two different Cold Steel knives. :thumbdn: (And BTW, both of those CS knives were made in USA :D )

But then, there are always a few of those folks on every forum, I guess. Perhaps I'm a bit too sensitive, and I should learn to just ignore them.

I believe forum members have made recommendations based on their personal experience. I think some recommend the same products from the same company time and time again. You have to look at the recommendation and then go to your local knife shop and actully look at some of these products. Most every products recommended on this site are high quality good products. But members get pretty passionate about what is best.

In a recent thread a guy asks for a (long lasting knife) and that he is willing to pay 300 to 400 dollars for it. He explains that he is tired of knives that
develop problems after a while of use.

A member of this esteemed forum tells him to buy (a spyderco military) along with three or four other SPYDERCO suggestions.

This is very consistent here. ALL THE TIME. Spyderco is over represented on this forum. I think that every employee in spyderco posts here. Maybe even their family members and people in the neighborhood.

Ask for a knife that will increase your sex drive, someone will say Spyderco.

Shame.

Objective? Not me Jack, I'm subjective as all get out because I try to offer my opinions based on my experiences, and those are limited. But at least I believe that I'm honest and upfront about my subjectiveness.

Wait a minute, Spyderco makes a knife that will increase my sex drive???? Could they make one that makes me handsome?

not very objective, lot of buck and spyderco fanboys. CS knockers etc. i myself am pretty objective, Im not afraid to try something new.

Not to beat a dead horse, or for that matter, pick this troll up from the bottom, but I was reading the "knife reviews" board earlier this morning and saw a question from Confederate that said, "What is your best folder, everybody?" Out of curiosity I checked out all of the responses and then left one of my own. The answers were soooooo varied. I saw a little bit of everything in there, and by no means was there an overabundance of Spyderco models. I guess my point is that this is an extremely passionate hobby we have, and sometimes, passions flare!! I cherish my right of opinion when I say you won't catch me dead without my Benchmade 710D2, and I'm sure anyone who uses a Spyderco every day feels the same way about their own blade. Sorry Dawg, I just think you're missing the point of being passionate about blades.:)
