Barkeeper's Friend and a green scotchbrite. It takes about 10 seconds per stone under running water, and they look like new. I also use a Rust Eraser ( http://www.agrussell.com/accessories/sharpening/rust_eraser.html ) if it needs a cleaning during sharpening. Lately, however, I've noticed the side of the rust eraser I have been using is getting loaded. One down, three to go. It's about six months old.
Seriously, once I got used to using a clean ceramic stone, it's hard to use them when they get slick because I know I'm wasting my time.
The diamond rods have saved me HOURS of time sharpening and cleaning when reseting an edge. They help to get a nice flat edge quick, which means alot less steel on the brown stones.
