How often do you disassemble for cleaning?

I just took apart my endura to clean it as I noticed it had gotten a little gritty. After disassembling and cleaning everything, it feels much smoother. This is one of the reasons I don't like the pinned Spydercos. How often do you guys clean your Spydercos?

I have never taken any knife apart to clean it. On my EDC i will clean in every couple days when i touch the edge up.

Couple days after you buy one to smooth out all of the edges to my liking. Inspect the product and adjust it. Put locktite in. Then you can rinse and lube from time to time. Works good on backlocks

I've got a few folders that are my dedicated fishing knives. They have all been exposed to a daily soaking of fish guts, blood, scales, saltwater etc. Most are Salts but I have used Millie, Endura, Manix LW and others too. I have never needed to take any of them apart. A couple of times I have had to loosen the pivots on my Salts to create enough space to blow out some fish scales.

Never disassemble, usually just a good squirt and wipe-down with Breakfree CLP cleans out any gunk and lubes the bearings and protects the finish from corroding.

not vary often! i only disassemble my knifes to change up there scales once in a blue moon!i have some pined spyderco's that have never needed cleaning,i just rise dry and oil, unless you dump them in dirt/sand!!i don't really see a need to always disassemble.

Every used knife I buy on
the Individual For sale section.

I don't want your Toe Jam on my food.

^^ Haha. I also disassemble/clean any pre loved knives. Otherwise, the only time I take down a knife is for grins and/or to see what makes it tick.

Unless it's one of my CRKs I don't dissemble any knife. i rely on cleaning it with water and soap followed by an air dry and lube.

I generally only take them apart for modification. It's hard for much to get between PB bushings and the blade. I don't do bearings.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with bearings. They work great, but I find myself obsessing over maintaining that like new fluidity and I end up not using the knife for fear of getting anything in the pivot. Silly. So I just quit buying them.

I bought a water pik at a garage sale. Mostly because the fact that someone included dental hygiene equipment in a garage sale entertained me, but for a whopping $3.25 it does a great job of cleaning nooks and crannies on my knives and tools. I fill it full of Super Clean and then just rinse the knife under the tap, dry and lube.

I can't think of any knife I've ever had to disassemble just to clean it.

I have taken knives apparently to fix issues, or modify them.

I've taken a couple Spydercos apart to change scales, and a knife of another brand apart to repair, but never taken any knife apart just to clean it.

Paul, you used a term one time while we were discussing this subject. It made me laugh but I can't for the life of me remember it. Something about curiosity and broken knives??

Edit: Its coming back to me. Something like "spyderco's warranty does not cover curiosity induced disasters" hehe. :p

I take them apart to clean whenever they start feeling gritty or gunked up. Usually every few months probably, I tend to vary my carry rotation.

I used to disassemble to clean but have since moved on to the belief that you really don't need to take a knife apart to clean it.

However, I prefer pretty stiff action on my knifes. I would rather have a stiff but smooth knife break in over time than a looser knife develop play. For that reason I usually take them apart once, lube them, and then reassemble to my desired stiffness and centered-ness and add loctite to hold that sweet spot. From then it's just rinsing and lubing for maintenance.

I almost never disassemble for cleaning, but I am pretty easy on my knives and they rarely if ever get wet or mucked up. The only time I take them apart is when I buy a used one, and want to get the seller's mung out of it.

This Spydie was nasty when I bought it on eBay, but cleaned up to look like new.

I will take my knives apart on rare occasions, but I usually just use an air compressor and a blow gun

I've never taken a Spyderco apart for cleaning.
I bought my first(an Endura) back in the early 90's, and it was my dedicated fishing knife for about 15 years. I would always clean my Trout at the stream, and then just shake the knife clean under the water. I threw that knife on the bank, or stuck it up in the sandy rocky soil while cleaning fish every time. The blade is scratched very badly, but its still the smoothest Spyderco I've ever had. I only oiled it a few times over the years.
