How often do you sharpen your EDC?

I feel like I sharpen it too much. Any time I use it for any major cutting it has to be sharpened or it will constantly drive me crazy. Most of the time it's still plenty sharp, it just drives me nuts.

You know you're being unnecessarily obsessive. Stop it. It's all right to touch up an edge. You could carry a small steel or this Viking Whetstone (about half-way down the page) to use instead of actually sharpening a still-sharp edge.

I touch up my EDC every day. Esav has the right idea. I keep a small ceramic rod in my lunch box just in case at work, but I still touch up everything I have used when getting home. I only resharpen when touching up doesn't produce the desired results due to blade angle.
If I can't shave body hair, it does not leave the house. Hence the perpetual bald patch on my arm or leg.:D

If your not taking much off the blade, and keeping it "sharp to the bone" then you aren't really being obsessive......much.

I'm a butcher, and using razor-like knives has me a little OCD about my EDC's

I usually give em a quick swipe on my EZE-LAP 520 fine side once a week unless I bust up my smooth edge, and then it just gets done till its sharp.

maybe if you got yourself a ceramic stone or something similar, I believe they are great for polishing blades

I guess "touch up" would be better use for what I do. I get wierd looks a lot because of my lack of or patchy arm hair all the time.

If it doesn't shave, or I can see light reflecting off the edge, then I'll give my Native a few swipes on the DMT fine or x-fine, depending on how bad it is... All in all, I'm still quite dissappointed in the edge holding. I mean, considering the cutting (or lack-thereof) it sees, it should NEVER need sharpening... At least not since I've got it.

sandpaper hey,
are you just using that by hand?
if so, do you find that it is easier than using something straight to finish an edge?
and how much abrasion does that cause?
I have a habit of carry coated blades and I hate to see the coating get scuffed from anything other than good hard use.

I sharpen my EDC (currently Native III in VG10) when I feel it is no longer properly performing my standard cutting chores or if I check the edge and it doesn't feel right. That is not after every use, and certainly not every day.

But YOUR knife is YOURS. Keep it your edge as sharp as you want and fuss with it as much as you want.

(but I still gots all my arm hair.:D )

I use the paper on a piece of wood I have for sharpening, it has bevled edges. I don't get ANY scuffs. That's a huge part I like about it, I just do it by hand and use my finger as a guide. No scratches period. Personally I do it in a swirling motion and then finish off with a stroke, I'm sure most people don't do it that way, but I like it. I don't feel like I'm removing that much metal at all, but I'm sure it's more than a ceramic rod.

edit: yes I find it much easier especially for touch ups

I carry a ceramic rod in the visor of my car and I touch up (about 7 strokes) on each side of my EDC every day.

I have an area in my house that serves as my knife work room. I have all tools, extra bolts, screws, and other goodies for tinkering. I also keep my Sharpmaker out and up with the white stones and will hit the edge a few times every other day or so. Very easy to maintain that razor edge than it is to restablish it.

I touch up my edc every month or so. When it doesn't slice paper cleanly anymore. A minute on the belt sander and it's good to go for another month.

I used to be obsessive about it, but I just have too much else going on right now.

occassionally the Halo, but I've not had it real long

When I feel the scary edge fading I just give it a few light passes on the Sharpmaker ultra-fine rods and the edge is restored with minimal material removal.

I use UF spyderco or chromium oxide after a day cutting anything heavier than paper, but only 3 or 4 strokes per side.
