How often do you sharpen your EDC?

I use a stockman type slipjoint in my shop for cutting leather and hard wood. I rotate knives regularly, and probably need to. hickory and leather can dull any steel. I freshen up the edge on a ceramic rod every time I pick up the knife. Could be dozens of times per project.

I share this obssession ... I'm trying to break myself of it. I used to sharpen (or rather "touch-up") and edge I'd used, usually immediately after use. As therapy for this condition, I've been trying to not do anything to my Buck 110 with a BG-42 blade until a spot on the edge won't grab a little on my thumbnail with very light pressure. It still might shave, but it won't slice to my liking. Then I do whatever I need.

So far I've gone more than a couple of weeks at a time more than once, but it's not like I'm doing a lot of heavy cutting every day. If I had to cut a few cardboard boxes, I'd be tuning the edge a little right away.

A notice I obsessively sharpen my knife, it's bad, I won't sharpen my knife, I just won't, But I will be needing a DMT stone for when my bad boy knife comes, Hopefully I can break the habit before it gets here.

If my knives wont send hair poping off, I will touch it up on the strop. I rarely use my sharpmaker.

I usually wait until I notice that the knife isn't cutting as well as I like and touch it up on the Sharpmaker with about 10 or so swipes on the fine stones. Get it back to hair shaving sharp and go.

I too share your obsession. I've remedied this by carrying 2 knives. One is used for light cutting and keeps it's scary sharp edge for a long time, and the other loses its scary sharp edge quickly from heavy cutting but maintains a somewhat sharp edge for a long time.

I touch up on sharpmaker my mostly used EDC every week, others depend on use. I sharpen our kitchen knives usually once a month.

Daily steeling on an old solingen fine mini pocket steel and that way I only need to break out the sharpmaker about once every week.

yeah I do the same. I tend to grab my leatherman when I need to cut something that's not just light cutting. Which seems stupid..... I mean, why do I spend eleventy dollars on a high quality pocket knife and then not use it. Something is seriously wrong with my think box.

Sometimes if I'm about to do something that requires a fine edge, like slicing through breads with plain edged knives, I give it a stropping on my jeans beforehand. Otherwise after they've been used a bit I give them a strop on my loaded leather strop. If I feel a decent amount of burring, it's a butchers steel then strop. I usually don't use stones or anything that takes off more than a negligible amount of steel unless I'm reprofiling or I'm that unsatisfied with the edge on a knife that I take it to my ceramic rod. Really it all depends on the use the knife sees. I strop on my pant leg maybe a couple times a week, and once a week or two I hit the leather. I rotate between a SAK Farmer, Nylon Solo and a G10 Cara Cara mainly.

Why isn't anyone saying how often they sharpen their EDC? Like once a week or once a month or once a day or ? It's obvious that you sharpen it when it gets a little dull but how often is that?

I sharpen my knife about once a month.

lol thread kinda strayed

I used to sharpen my knife everyday, but they don't last very long that way LOL.

Now I sharpen once or twice a month, somtimes more somtimes less.Im not real big on stropping in between sharpenings,I just touch up on fine ceramic and strop, then use it until I get bored or It quits slicing paper smoothly.

I've been keeping a bunch of cheapos laying around. That way when I get bored and feel like making something sharp, I have a real challenge. Keeps me off my good EDC's and nice knives.
