How often do you switch knives?

I try to carry something new every day, sometimes two at a time. I sometimes change a few times a day also. I work out of my home so lately I find my self doing this more often.

I think the switching of carry knives reflects a self rationalizing effort to justify a personal tendancy (almost a conpulsion) to want to spend money on knives because you like them. In most cases, a single SAK is probably all you need for an EDC.

I find it difficult to switch the actual knife (or knives) in my pocket every day. I have what I consider a lot of choices and for the most part they just sit on my desk where I fondle them often or in their boxes in a drawer, cabinet, or storage box. I probably have 10-12 knives lying on my desk right now.

I have purchased a couple knives in the last 6 to 12 months with the intent of actually rotating my EDC's. The latest is a GEC traditional and probably a small SAK combo to replace the single SAK that I have carried and used for years every day. But does this make any real sense? Carrying two knives because I want to when all I really need is the single SAK for almost every use I have even in the woods?

When I hit the woods, the fixed blades come out of hibernation. But again, the single SAK is all that I feel I actually need and usually what I choose to use even in the woods. It's a personal issue and a compulsion to find the ultimate knife which I have decided doesn't exist unless the SAK is in fact my ultimate knife.

I agree with the compulsion thing, although mine isn't to justify buying more, it's just the kind of person I am. I'll sell knife in an effort to downsize and give myself less options, and then turn around and buy something new. This gets talked about quite a bit in one of the other sub forums, but I've always admired the one knife people, but I just can't seem to pull it off.

I never sell my knives. I probably mis-spoke on the justification part to buy more.... it is simply to try another knife that catches your eye and of course to get it you have to buy it. I don't feel a need to own 100 knives, but it happens. There is a bit of a compulsion aspect to this when you really like blades.

I usually just carry what fits into the pocket of the pants I'm wearing that day the best. I think most of my knives can stand up to just about everything I would use it for. I do have ones that I tend to grab if I'm doing certain tasks but mostly just one that fits best. I hope to get my first Sebenza soon so that will more than likely be my EDC, my ZT 0550 will be my hard use hiking folder, and my Manix 2 for yard work. I want to get to the point where they are used for various tasks. My other knives will just make it in when they get a chance. Like my mini grip when I need a sub 3" blade which isn't often as my state has very open knife laws.

I think it's fun to have alot of options. I carried an Al Mar SERE for three years and just switched to my new ZT0300st. The ZT is the first knife in my collection that I like enough to take the SERE's place in my pocket.

I usually switch knives every day, but recently I have been carrying my XM-18 that I just got, and I can't seem to get it out of my pocket. I have about 30 or so knives, and only about 10-15 get carried regularly.

I am a frequent switcher. I have work, home, indoor, outdoor, and fondling knives. Sometimes they are one in the same.

I switch several times a day. I can't have a knife on me at all times so at home I try and make up for missed pocket time!

I try to carry different knives each day, so my entire collection gets some pocket time. If I know that I will be performing framing inspections I make sure I have one of my heavier blades to test the quality of the lumber framing, and check for damage.

I switch every day....based on the need. However, I only have four makers in folders/utility that tickle my fancy now.....CRK Mnandi, Pat & Wes Crawford and Kevin Wilkins for larger folders and SAK for utility folder or their Swiss Tool. I will change up the order/mix, but there is always a Mnandi or a SAK involved!

for me, it all depends on what i know i will be doing. if I know im going to be working & need a knife im not afraid to open cans, use as a screw driver or get paint on, ill go for a cheaper heavier duty knife. If im in an office ill grab a gents folder or something light

I tend to carry the same pair for long periods of time. These days, it's a Vic Ambassador for the tools and a Mini-Grip for the blade although I typically use the Ambassador's blade more often. I used to carry a Vic Classic and Buck 501 and I may carry the 501 a little more often because I like the looks and feel of the Buck so much.

But like an earlier poster mentioned, a SAK is really all almost anyone needs for a great EDC or a decent multi-tool. The rest is simply the excess of our hobby.

Depends on how far ill be going into boston city limits. If ill be walking around downtown then ill switch to somthing within the blade limit but most of the time i just go afew hundred feet into the city to go to the fenway movie theater. Other than that my knife tends to stay the same between the counterpoint II and the Spartan with the ocasional addition of a fixed blade.

I do. Spyderco for now Mili Ti to Mili CF to Para2 M390 and so on. Today is Para2 M390 with John Grimsmo's Ti honeycomb scales and micro Leatherman multi-tool + Victorinox . Lately I've been looking at Hinderer's 4'' flippers.

Not often. I've been EDCing a pair of matching Spyderco Millies for the past three weeks or so. Every once in awhile I switch for "show-off" reasons. Talking to others and they want to see a knife I have, so I switch out my EDC for a few days to rotate my nicer knives. Today I am gonna pack my old Camillus Cuda Maxx 5.5 D2, as a guy at work was asking about it. I'll also tote something smaller to use, as the 5.5 is a pretty "scary" looking big folder. Not scary to me, scary to the sheeple.

Tomorrow will probably switch to my Cutlery Shoppe limited edition Benchmade Skirmish.

Back to the Millies starting Saturday, probably. ;-)

Usually daily. But when I get something new I try to carry it for at least a week, then it goes in to the rotation

Well, I've been carrying two Spydies since I got back 'into' folders, Stretch and a smaller Calypso Jr. Now, when I leave the office, a Vulcan goes into my 'large blade' role, with Stretch to the back pocket. Still haven't decided what for a smaller, more 'NKP'-friendly blade, but a Pingo is a strong contender.
