When working as an archaeologist, I used it all day every day. Couldn't have drawn accurate site maps or walked transect lines without it.
I still use a compass regularly now; there are no trails where I most often hike.
I have a GPS too; I mostly use it for geocaching, not for actual navigating. When hiking I collect GPS data points occasionally throughout the day. Then back at home I can plot a map of where I've been.
