How often have you used your warranty?

Hey, guys, I was out making a fire the other day, and I was thinking about how great it was that if I took my 6, threw it against a rock, then hit it with a sledge, I'd get a new one, no questions asked.

But then it occurred to me that I really haven't had many knives truly BREAK on me, to the point where they are no longer functional. I mean, I've been using my old SP10 factory second along with my Ka-Bar LHB, even in 20-degree weather, and in a few conditions and they've held up fine, although the SP10 retains an edge like a bulimic retains Thanksgiving dinner.

So, how many of your knives have you actually broken, not limited to ESEEs, but I'm looking for those mostly. And if so, what were you doing?

May I ask why you were thinking this? At all?

As for knives, I haven't broken any doing normal use. (Batoning/chopping included in normal use)

maybe i'm not understanding the OP, but i don't believe he was considering that type of stuff nor condoning it. i think he was just pointing out that they are warranteed against even the type of abuse that would likely be necessary to damage such a sturdy knife. kind of a compliment, not so much a plan to exploit their warranty :) then again, i could be wrong.

as for knives i've broke. i had a handle crack a little bit on a Buck Nighthawk, that had been dropped onto a hard surface from too high (long story). i do NOT consider it any fault of the knife and Buck quickly replaced it. i was impressed with their service. mucho kudos to Buck :)

I took a Winchester knife and used a hammer for batoning once, but I just wanted to destory this crappy blade........and it did
but I didn't try to use it as a warraty claim either

Never had any problems/warranties with any of my knives.

Something like 15-20 years ago, I had the blade on a Gerber multitool chip cutting rope or something -- lost a chunk of steel the size of my little fingernail, and it was replaced. Otherwise, the only knives I've broken are my roommate's cheap steak knives. They have about a quarter inch of tang embedded in a plastic handle, though, and aren't really worth dignifying with the title of knife.

I broke the tip off a Buck 119 once when I was a kid. I was in scouts and trying to make a bearing block. It was winter though and the blade was cold.

I don't think dad tried to send it in though.

Never used a warranty on a knife. Either they're good enough you probably won't ever need it or the warranty is poor enough it's not worth the headache and they go in the trash.

Well said, I feel the same way.

I've never had the need or desire to use my ESEE warranty. I have had to contact Benchmade for a replacement pocket clip once, and Spyderco once for a replacement stripped screw (my fault--used a damaged bit).

Me too!

Years back I easily broke the tip off an original Buck Diamondback carving a huge piece of cedar, and had a rubber handle come right off the original smaller version of the Buck Diamondback while debarking a length of wood to make a staff. They were made overseas and the least desirable fixed blades I ever bought and I got what I paid for..they were about $20 and $15. I doubt if they had a warranty and if they did it wasn't worth my time bothering with. It was then I started buying higher quality blades.

back when my EDC was a Spyderco Endura, one of the ones after the version with the molded in zytel clip, i was walking into In N Out burger and snagged the pocket clip on a car in the parking lot (think it was the mirror) and it ripped the metal clip and the threaded metal inserts out of the plastic.

still have the same knife, it just lives in a a rollcab toolbox in the garage and gets used occasionally for garage utility chores. no clip needed. i'm sure they'd replace it if i sent it in, but i don't have any plans to do that.

have a ZT 0200 that came with the holes i wanted to move the pocket clip to for tip up right hand carry were NOT threaded. all the others were. sent it back, they threaded them or swapped the liner and sent it back.

had a Leatherman Sideclip that was my EDC for years. broke the tip of one side of the pliers when using them, but not doing anything harsh, just cracked off with gentle pressure. they don't make that model any more so they sent me something else with a bolt on clip. it's junk and i can't stand it compared to the Sideclip. it's in a box somewhere.

broke the tip on the main blade of a SAK, reground it and it's around here somewhere.

have a Henkiels paring knife with a scale that broke around the center rivet. i need to figure out where to send that for a warranty replacement.

my trick had a recall for the lower ball joints in the front suspension. Toyota replaced the parts under warranty.

i have a drawer full of Logitech mice that i need to send in because the wheel doesn't work any more.

have a few Craftsman hand tools that i've exchanged over the years, and a few i need to exchange in the garage.

had a Surefire 6Z that blew the bulb the first time i turned it on. called them and they sent me a new bulb.

just don't throw it at a tree 1,000 times.

Snapped the knife off of a leatherman wave if that counts. Was cutting into a hickory handle and was pushing on the knife pretty hard and snap. That is the only thing that has ever broken on me and was replaced right away. It should not have broken when it did but sometimes shit happens.

The pocket clip on my old Kershaw Blur kept coming loose, and it finally fell off one day before I had a chance to re-torque the screws with some thread locker. I sent an email and inquired if the clips and screws were available for purchase (because I felt it was my fault, and not worthy of their warranty coverage), and they instead agreed to send me a new set free of charge. A few days later I had a package in the mail that contained three sets of screws and clips.

I've never used the warranty on any of my other knives, though I did take one back to the retailer where I purchased it for an exchange: a Buck 119 I bought as a teenager came with a sheath that had a bad rivet job. I bought it at K-Mart, of all places, totally paying no attention to the advice of the film Rain Man.

Never broke one but I had to contact gerber for a replacement pocket clip a few years back. I offered to pay for it but they didn't charge me anything for it.

I've never used warranty on any of my knives. As far as my ESEE's I can't imagine ever needing to use it. They are just so well built.

God bless,
Adam

I've had to replace a Spyderco pocket clip too once, although the break was my own fault. I tend to cut corners in/out of doorways and catch the clip, well bending and bending back caused a stress and one day it snapped off on a door jamb. The new clip was not covered by warranty, but that was fine with me.

However one the clip screws broke off inside the threads and I still haven't managed to get it out if anyone has any ideas...

Not yet. I'm only up to 638 throws into a tree so far.
