I was just turned seven when my eleven year old brother gave me his old Barlow knife after he got the first Swiss Army Knife that I ever saw for Christmas in 1949. But I came from a knife carrying family. My wife refused to let me give my son a pocket knife until he was twelve. My personal opinion is that a child is ready to own a knife when he/she shows the responsibility to handle it carefully. My son would have been ready at about seven or eight, but my daughter is not ready at nearly fourteen.
Whatever you decide, please remember that the rules about what is allowed in school are so very different from what I or we knew as kids. My friends and I all carried at school and nobody cared as long as we didn't hurt anybody with them.
