How old

Since no-one else stepped up to the plate to answer your question, I'll take a stab at it.

I couldn't find anything with google, so I don't think there's an age limit on who can carry a knife, but I could be wrong about that.

I'd get a second opinion if I were you, as local city ordinances can be hard to find on the internet.

That's the thing I couldn't find anything on age either.
Thanks for replying though, there's a CHP right down the road so maybe I'll drive down and ask someone there.

If you're old enough to drive, you're probably old enough to carry a pocketknife.

here is the relevant los angeles municipal code:

SEC. 45.01. FIREARMS – KNIVES – SLINGSHOTS – SALE TO MINORS.

(b) springback knife,

(c) fixed or locking blade knife having a blade over two inches in length,

(d) dirk or dagger having a blade over two inches in length,

SEC. 45.02. FIREARMS – MINORS – POSSESSION OF.
No person under 18 years of age shall have in his possession, care, custody or control any article or thing mentioned in the preceding section.

Does that code go for LA county or just LA city? If I'm correct, I can carry a 2.9" locking folder in LA and Orange County(Excluding school) right? Btw, I'm 14.

That section covers basically transfer, not possession. Doesn't preclude carrying if you already have it.

Ahem- Section 45.01 prohibits sale and enumerates a list of weapons the ordinance applies to.

45.02 prohibits posession. See below (highlighting mine)

yeah, ya gotta read the whole thing for it to make sense.

So, in LA, one can drive at 15/16, but has to wait till they are 18 to carry a knife with an over 2 inch blade? What a strange, illogical, moronic, backwards law this is. If it were me, I wouldn't follow such an unjust law, but thats just me.

what exactly does one have to do with the other?

you also have to be 18 to vote, and 21 to buy alcohol or drink in public.

It just thought it ridiculous that whomever made the law doesn't/ didn't trust anyone under 18 with a knife that isn't tiny and non-locking, while at the same time, they have no problem with the same minors operating a motor vehicle.

EDIT: I also think the drinking age should be much lower than it is now, as many other countries have low drinking ages, and their rates of youth alcohalism are lower than ours. Make something taboo, and it suddenly becomes "cool" to do it. Make it the norm, and suddenly the "cool factor" disappears.

IMO, saying someone has to be 18 to vote, is different than saying someone has to be 18 to carry a knife. One is making sure that young teenagers, who are, for the most part immature and not interested in politics, don't vote for childish reasons (I know, many adults vote for childish reasons, but they are the exception rather than the rule. This is reversed with young teenagers.), and the other is denying young people access to a basic and useful tool (Most young teenagers are mature enough to handle and use a knife properly, if only their parents would teach them).

who is to say it was the same person, or same people, that drafted both laws?

this, in and of itself, makes the comparison invalid.

you're comparing apples and kangaroos.

2"! I would love to know how law makers (everywhere) come up with size justification. Too small for much means no interest or easier to criminalise children.

There should be a law (yep I can't believe that I said this) that ordinances/laws be centrally listed for google etc comparative search.

Oopsies, I overlooked that for some reason.Durhh!! Shoulda' been obvious...:o:o

Still, it does lead one to this question: Do the person/ people who drafted the knife carrying age limit feel the same way about the driving age limit? If it was at all feasable, would they attempt to raise the age that a person could get his or her license to 18 or older?

Just a guess, but it could be that whomever drafted the legislation used their own personal knife as a reference. "I get by just fine everyday with a 2" penknife. Nobody NEEDS to carry a knife with a blade over 2 inches anyway."... or something silly along those lines.:barf:

doubtful.

the driving age has been set by the state of california. the penal code places no restrictions on minors carrying knives.

the knife law regarding minors is a city municipal code.

So anyone under 18 cant even carry a slipjoint legally?
Sucks...

You can carry a slipjoint with any length blade you want. You can also carry a locking folder or fixed blade as long as the blade is 2 inches or under.
