How Rust Resistant Is A M4 Knife Blade If It Has A DLC Coating?

M4 will rust less readily than 1095, 52100, 80crv2 etc. It'll rust more readily than 3v, Cruwear and other semi stainless steels. I'd imagine a fixed blade in m4 would be just fine as long as you wiped it down with some oil after a days use. You can also look at products like tuf glide (though that may make knives unsafe for food prep)

Can you patina M4?

Unless you’re swimming in the ocean with an M4 knife, I really don’t think the average knife user has anything to fear with regard to rust. Keep it dry when you’re done using it and don’t leave it stuck in a log outside in the rain, should be no problems.

Are you trying to use DLC to protect the aesthetics? or the durability and performance of your knife.

In terms of performance and durability, before the rust deals any real damage to your blade stock, it would have already wrecked the edge.
I'm asking if this DLC coating provides a level of corrosion resistance to knives. I know some knives like the Cold Steel knives like the Voyager that have had their M4 blade with the DLC coating, and on some of their other knives. I just wondered if it really made any difference other than looking cool.

I use Breakfree CLP (also called RemOil) on my guns and knives for corrosion resistance.

Bob- Obviously, my thought is that if a DLC coating prevents rust on an M4 steel blade like my Gayle Bradley 1 knife then I don't have to fool around oiling the knife every time I use it for some cutting that might or would corrode it.

I guess you didn’t read the link I posted. DLC itself is porous.

I don’t think Cold Steel has ever used M4 blade steel.

I wipe down my M4-equipped Mini-Griptilian with the same cloth I use to wipe down my firearms.
All of them remain rust-free!

My DLC sng in 3v was in a high humidity environment for around a week and there was some noticeable rust starting to form. It all rubbed off after a good scrubbing.

You are correct. I said Cold Steel and I should have said Kershaw.

Here was a test of DLC and other coatings corrosion. DLT performed well, not perfect but very good.

Good video on that last one. That was pretty interesting. I've always heard how awesome DLC is as a coating and it was good to see how well it held up to wear and corrosion. I think it'd be cool if ESEE offered a DLC option.
