How sharp have your Beckers been?

I just got a BK16 -- first Becker, first high carbon blade, first love(okay, not really). I have to say, it was shaving sharp out of the box. I was pretty impressed with the edge, considering I've had knives come in the mail literally rounded off. I have many plans for this 16, and I'm already looking at getting a few 14s for myself, the girlfriend, and another just as an extra. The build quality is amazing; the 16 feels great in my hands, and I truly can't wait for my next Becker. But, all of this is for another thread.

So, how sharp have your Beckers been? :D

Every Becker I received was shaving sharp right out of the box.

My BK2 was decently sharp... but not shaving sharp. My BK9 was hair popping sharp. BK4 was just a little bit less than the BK9.... BK16 is on order and should be here early next week... I'll have to let you know then.

Out of the 2 beckers I have my 7 came really sharp, was very happy with it. But my 14 came disappointingly dull and when looking down the edge you could see it was off centre where the blade swept up to the tip, took me a while to fix it on a sharpener, but it's quite sharp now as well. I think my bk14 was not a common thing (at least I hope) as I haven't seen anyone else say they had that problem.

Me. :D But I can't fault anyone at Ka-Bar over it, as I did get mine really cheap at the Ka-Bar booth at the NRA convention, I think they were selling it as a factory second. No worries from me over other blades coming dull, none of my other
Ka-Bar brand knives have (1 out of 7 including my dad's bk2 ain't bad)
My 11 was hair popping, the 14 was a second so it doesn't count, Dad's bk2 had a toothy but shaving sharp edge (lost it quickly due to the old sheath) and my 7 was at the point that I could have had it whittling hair with some stropping. My other 3 Ka-Bars were outstanding too.

My BK12/RSK MK2 could only be described as "stupid sharp" out of the box. How it didn't slide right through the sheath and out of the box during shipping I don't know :)

My BK14 was shaving sharp, or close enough, but somewhat unevenly ground, with the "short" side being on the side with the BKT stamp.

My Beckers are so sharp that they will cut you just by looking at them! No joke it's happened:cool:

My 9 was shaving sharp out of box, but I turned the edge into a hair-popping convex now. :)

Every one I have gotten so far (2, 2 14's, 9, 11, FFG16, FPR 16, 15) has been incredibly sharp except my bk2 and my FPR 16. The bk2 would slice paper nicely but not shave. the FPR would shave with a little more effort than all the others.

However I would expect that the edges were more than adequate for the average person. Us knife nuts get a little picky.

Now that I think about it my bk2 might have not been as sharp from the sheath. I think its one of the high glass content ones. when I first got it I sheathed and unsheathed it a bunch before trying to shave hair with it. So it is possible that it came much sharper.

ok I'm done rambling now, Welcome and enjoy your new 16 :)

All mine have been dull as hell, but out of the box sharpness means nothing to me since I convex all my blades anyway.

Dull as hell? That is surprising. You must have gotten bad luck man. Did they shave hair coming out of the box? Couldn't make feather stick curls/nice thin shavings? I am just curious because I know everyone has their own definition of "sharp"

My definition of sharp is shaving hair and being able to cleanly cut "S" and "C" shaped cuts through magazine or phonebook paper. Its a little beyond bad luck since I own 7 beckers and at the best (cant remember which one) made a dull cut through some A4 paper.

Yikes that is some bad luck, don't play the lotto man. That is not an unreasonable definition of sharpness. Good thing about 1095cv is it is east to sharpen and get that nice scary sharp edge.

I'm pretty obsessive with sharpening, if I see a test on a knives sharpness or something like that I'll always go and see if I can pull it off...My skills are nowhere near what some people's are though.

The 14 I just ordered for my brother was not very sharp out of the box. It had this weird film on the blade when I got it, too. Naturally, the first thing I did was convex it, so it doesn't matter now. My first 14 was plenty sharp out of the box, though. Some less than perfect knives do get out of the factory.

I had my remora sharp enough to shave my face. One of my bk 5's is about that sharp now, but I didn't sharpen it. Albert at seattle edge sharpened that one.

All my Beckers have came sharp ''enough'' to use really. Most would shave, The dullest on average are the 14s, I don't think I have handled a NIB 14 yet that would shave easily, 2 of the ones I have gotten were pretty dull. The 11s I have gotten were both sharp, oddly enough. The sharpest Out Of Box Becker I have received was my 9, with my 7 and 5 right behind.

My FPR16 was pretty dang dull too.
