How sharp is 1000 grit sharp?

All I use for my AUS8 and 420HC, 8Br13MoV and other softer common steels is a cheap $3 Arkansas white stone from Smiths.

440 series too

Even works for the CTS-XHP blades, but takes considerably more effort

The Smith's pocket pal white ceramic section is 1000 grit, I believe, and I take it camping to sharpen Moras and 4116 Krupp steel blades from CS, they all get paper slicing sharp in a minute.

It easily makes the blades shaving sharp (H1 steel included), you should be able to cleanly shave arm hair with it, IME:

The stone the OP is using is a JIS rating waterstone. Your Arkansas stone is probably closer to a 3-4000 grit waterstone.

Comming off my diamond 140 grit I can shave and almost push cut paper. It's all refinement after that.
