how sharp is the Kershaw Leek?

Hi,

I am considering the Kershaw Leek as a small EDC folder for the office. I know it may not be the ideal for office setting with the assisted opening function, but I just love the sleek, slim look of the knife.
So is the Leek really always scary sharp out of the box as everyone says it is?

Thanks

I've had some come scary sharp and others not so much. You can always just sharpen it, if the edge isn't to your liking.

In my experience, Kershaws come very sharp OOTB. You may want to consider picking up a sharpener of some kind if you don't already have one. The Spyderco Sharpmaker is a fantastic choice. I've had mine for years now and it's still kickin.

Almost all of mine have come out super sharp. Especially my composite blade leek. I was shaving hairs of my rams until My wife said I looked like a man-o-lantern!

Funny you should ask.

I gave a non knife guy I work with a Leek as a Secret Santa present this year.

He spent New Years Eve in the Emergency room getting a half dozen stitches.

He was trying to cut a candle in half - while cutting toward his other hand.

The knife slipped and he stabbed the back of his hand between his thumb and index finger. According to him it almost went all the way through.

I've yet to own a Kershaw that didn't have a sharp edge from the factory.

Also, if it comes dull, just sharpen it. Ta-Daaaa! Problem solved.

All the Kershaw knives I have were really sharp out of the box. The knife can be as sharp as you want, sharpening it. ;)

If it is not scary sharp out of the box you can always sharpen it. But I have a Leek CB and I have to say that I had a problem with sharpness. It was sharp, but not as sharp as I like, because the blade was too thick over the edge. I convexed it a bit, sharpened 15 degrees per side and now it is much better. I also modified the clip (folded it over), so it rides low, what I prefer. I've carried it this week, that is a very nice, slim knife.

Im just wondering if an assisted opening knife would be appropriate for an office setting, especially in liberal NJ?!
Wondering if I should just purchase my second choice, Spyderco Chaparral.

The Leek runs about $40 most places. Try it, it's not like that would break the bank.

I just ordered the Leek. Hope to have it by next week. It gets a 5-Star review and very high praise. Sounds like a quality knife.

Out of box edges don't mean much. Kershaw knives do have great factory edges, but resharpening done correctly will give you a far better edge.

Mine's sharp. It almost sounds like you are worried that it'll be too sharp... Imo they aren't scary looking (or acting) knives at all. Far from it. If you are worried about the assist though you can always just open it with two hands so that it doesn't flip open.

if you aren't too sure of the assisted opening, a kershaw skyline is also a great option

mine has always been sharp enough to shave my arm. when it get dull then I use my knife sharpner that I made and it is ready to shave my arm again. I cut up alot of boxes with it and that seams to dull the blade out fast. here is a picture of my sharpner that I made my self.
