How tell if wood has been stabilized?

I bought some nice pieces of wood at the knife show in Portland in 2008, tossed them on a shelf, and now I can't remember if they have been stabilized or not. Is there any way to tell? One is buckeye, and seems heavy. The other piece is a set of amboyna scales, which seem light. I got them from Gallery Hardwoods, but that's all I know. Any help appreciated.

I'd say your Buckeye is definitely stabilized. That stuff is feather light when it's natural.

thanks Larry, that's a relief. No need to repond to my other query.

They should also have a distinct smell when cutting into them. I don't really know how to describe it. Sort of a pungent somewhat 'fruity' smell. I don't know.:p

As stated, if the buckeye seems heavy, it is almost definitely stabilized. The surface of stabilized woods should be able to be polished like marble.
