Say for a 3" to 4" user knife using good quality stainless I now leave the edge app. 100th of an inch (1/4 to 1/3 mm)

Should I go thinner? What do you guys do?

What's the final thickness you're shooting for? I leave my edge (Elmax) at about .012 and it comes back perfect. Next time I'll probably take it to the same as you at .010. I am also curious if people go further than that.

assuming the hardening company uses a vacuum oven and a gas quench there is no big risk of warping and there is almost no scaling/decarburization so you can go really thin, but 1/4mm is really thin already in my opinion.

I generally try to hang at the .015" area for heat treat, but I have sent hem out at .010" and they came back straight, clean, and un-rippled. I doubt I would go thinner, but I think you may be safe.

Brad from Peters told me to leave at least .015.
