how thick is the ATR?

well that would depend on how big your pocket is :P
but in all seriousness I could and my pockets are on the tighter side

Most internet pictures don't do this bad boy justice, with the above being the exception. When I ordered my ATR, I assumed it was going to be a massive blocky hunk of steel. Needles to say I was giddy when it arrived, thinner than an unlinered D3! It gives my Ayoob a run for its money, which I never thought was possible.

The knife does take up a fair amount of horizontal pocket space though, and the pocket clip is the opposite of discreet. At least 3/4" of the knife is exposed from the pocket, so, on the times when I don't feel like announcing "I'm carrying a big ass knife today" to the world, I just tuck it IWB. Its very comfortable in that position. The pocket clip is a bear, so I added a lanyard, and now it deploys just fine.

If your looking for a butter smooth beast for urban, private consumption, you could do no better. For the woods or for use in public (unless your a fireman) get something else.

In fairness, the answer to your questions does depend somewhat upon the size of your hand and the fit of your trousers. That said, the body of the ATR (at least the Ti version) is approximately 3/8" thick. The ends of the pivot bolt add about another 1/32" to each side. The cobra hood is approximately the same width as the knife's thickness. That, more than the thickness of the knife itself, could make attempting to reach into your pocket past it problematic. You could wind up scraping a knuckle, partially opening the blade, or both. There's also the question of how sensible it is to carry an open backed knife in the same pocket with other objects, but those are factors of which only you can judge the relative importance.

I carry my ATR and cell phone in the same pocket and have plenty of space. The ATR is about a millimeter thicker than my SS D4. It carries quite comfortably, although, as one poster has already mentioned, it does stick out of your pocket a bit more than might be welcome.
