Ok how thin. I was trying to keep them 1/16" or more but the stuff I am using now is thinner to start with and if keep it that thick I won't beable to grind much.

I planed to keep it abiut .04" thick at edge is this to thin? It is A2.

Also on file work do you do it before or after heatreat?

Before would be easyer but I would think you would get cracks alound sharp edges of file work. So I bet you do it after heatreat

With the heat treat process I'm using, I realy get no scale of any kind. I take my blades right to the finished size. Depending on the finish I will be putting on them, I usually stop at a 220 belt. After heat treat it, it finishes up nice from there.
As far as the actual thickness, It realy depends on the type of knife you are doing and the edge geometry you are looking for. The edges on my Tanto Neck Knives are thin, almost like a razor. The edges on my Large Hunter/Camp Knife are much thicker with less angle.
I have never measured my edge thickness! Centerlines are scribed and then I grind until it looks right by eye.

EDIT: I do my filework before heat treat. When I finish the blade, I often touch up the filework with diamond files.

I've been taking my o-1 blades to 030 with no problem. this is around a 1/32".

Marquenching in salt baths I am able to use edge thicknesses less than .010. Some paring knives from 1/16" stock have gone to HT with edges under .005, and there has been no rippling. Carefull, cool grinding is the trick (along with the salt). Oh, these are flat ground blades.

Neil, does 440c and ats-34 come out of heat treat pitted???

L6,
I don't use either steel! But.... My Lakeland neibor and long time Guild member, Bill Simons uses ATS-34. I visit him often and ejoy watching him make folders. The ATS34 is done in a Stainless wrap the way I do my D2 and A2. I have never seen any pitting on his blades, they just turn a light gray color. I'm not realy sure about the 440C.

could always finish grinding them hard just watch heat build up. Using newer belts&light preasure helps. monitor the temp using short contact time and your fingertips and keep a dip bucket close by
