i was wondering how thin you take the master bevel. how thick do you leave it behind the edge. im having problems keeping the tip on my hallow ground valor knife. its super thin around .0041 + or - .0003. so i gess i have to ask how thin is to thin. the steel is O-1. How would someone determine what edge thicknes a steel could handle. i use to just put a sharp edge on the knife and call it good. but now im trying to understand the steel and thin down the edge to increese its proformace. thanks every one.

Much of the thickness behind the edge is going to depend on the intended use of the knife. A scalpel or razor needs to be very thin, whereas a chopping blade needs to be thicker for strength. A general purpose type may be somewhere in between. You would have to experiment and see what works best for what you want the blade to do.

also the type of grind needs to be taken in to account

hollow leaves the least amount of steel behind the edge then flat then convex
