how thin,is to thin??

That reminds me, I need a micrometer. Any recommendations without spending an arm and a leg?
Instead of micrometer, Try a pair of digital calibers. They measure up to 6''
You can used then to lay out a blade. I was machinist for ten years. My most used tool was my calibers. I found the micrometer was very limited tool.

I'm with Blacktoe on this one too. Our most used measuring tool in our machine shop is our calipers. ENCO has some reasonable prices on there own ENCO brand, Mitutoyo brand is next higher but be prepared to shell some bucks for a Starrett brand. Starretts sure are great though! made in the USA.
