How to Blacken those obvious pocket clips that are sliver in color?

There are so many ways that seem to be toxic in nature in blackening a pesky silvery "here I am pocket clips".

From "Tool Black", "Drain Out", "Gun Blue", Hot Oil and so on or short of just giving up and taking to a gun smith.

What really gives it that black inconspicuous look that's simple and fast short of painting it and rubbing off later?

You could just take the offending clip off. The clipless knife won't explode in your pocket or anything. :D

Buy a roll of black hockey tape, cut out a thin strip of appropriate width and length, and just stick it on the outside of the clip. Voila! Now your clip has a matte/fabric look that will attract less attention. It's super quick, cheap, easy and non-permanent. Replace as needed.

Spray paint that part of your pants silver so the clip blends right in!

Aside from paint or some sort of Kote, you aren't going to have luck changing the color of the stainless steel clip.

and you call yourselves men... you have missed the obvious solution. DUCT TAPE!!!! seriously though, it is easy to reapply, a 5 dollar roll will last you years, and it serves the purpose admirably.

you could always do a stone-washed finish on the clip, less shiny = less visible... or buy/make your own custom clip. Now, go get out the glue gun and popsicle sticks and get crafty. :)

unless one has on black ninja pants, or zubaz round house kick to the head type pants, or those tap out ultimate mall fighting style pants........won't the black clip stick out as much as the silver on a pair of khakis or blue colored standard jeans?

I don't know why I never thought about this before, but I must give jbmonkey credit for bringing it to my attention. If you wear jeans most of the time, why not glue some denim over the clip? Or some khaki pant material if you're a khaki-wearing kind of guy? I tend to wear 'black ninja pants' (cargo pants) most of the time, but I bet it would still benefit me to make this conversion, with some black material. I think I'm gonna try it.

Try and trade it for a black one?
Bead blast it, that's generally what I like.
Or you could try burning it.

Orr just don't clip it to your pocket? I just put the whole entire knife inside my pocket because I hate how obvious it is even with a black clip. Usually the top half an inch or more of the knife will also be showing if you clip it.

oh i was just having some fun, while trying badly to make a valid point. i wear black ninja pants, well cargo pants as well on occasion. i don't like black pocket clips, because most times they are coated or painted, and i carry my keys on a belt loop clip deal and the keys tend to bang agaisnt the clip and wear away the coating. so they do scratch the stainless ones, but i prefer that to missing chips of coating, but that's me.

I think paint will rub off eventually. I don't worry too much about a silver clip. If I'm trying to be inconspicuos , I just slip the whole knife down in the pocket till I can take it out again.

Just for laughs... I bought a Buck Vantage for a friend of mine who is a total knife noob. When I saw him a couple of weeks later, he had the clip on the inside of his pocket and the knife outside !!
Having never owned a clip knife before , I had to give him some educating on proper knife carry before he lost it.

Ok, here's what you do.

Get yourself a bottle of gun blue and a bottle of ferric chloride.

Wash your project thoroughly to remove any oils , prints etc. I like to use a little spot of duct tape to hold my project down , like to a piece of cardboard or something.
Grab a few Q-Tips.
Coat your project thoroughly with the F.C. and let it 'soak in' for a minute , dab it up with a dry Q-Tip.
Then coat it with the gun blue solution , it will ( or should ) blacken immediately , let it 'soak in' then take it to the sink and spray it with Windex , or douse it in baking soda to kill the acidic properties , dry it off.

Grab some very fine steel wool and polish off the schmutz and you will have a nice dark gray/ black finish on your project.

Keep in mind it is not permanent and will scratch through carrying and usage etc. Also you may have to try it a few times to not get it patchy or blotchy looking but it does work ! :)
I've done it dozens and dozen of times on clips , frames , near anything stainless that wont take a patina.

Wear your black or silver clip proudly and wear your shirt untucked to cover it up!
