Recommendation? How to carry a traditional knife?

I like to carry a few knives for fondling and such so I distribute them around a bit.

My girlfriend got me this belt sheath. I never thought of getting one, personally, but now that I have it I enjoy using it.

I also have a small wallet by Yellow Birch Outfitters, that has three slots on one side, I keep a pen, another knife, and a flashlight there.

that is neat! like a holster almost, but how is it in terms of room, 15? 77? 48? 98?

Depending on the pant, I'll carry up to a five inch folder LFP with my keys. Thinner knives carry well, thicker, not quite as well. 3.75 inches is my lower limit. Some parts work better with certain knives. I just try things untill I'm happy.

I remember asking a question similar to this when Summer finally came and I switched out my jeans for shorts. In jeans I always carried mine in my watch pocket. The thickest traditional I tend to carry is a two spring, and they're almost always under 4 inches. So even if it stuck out a wee bit it didn't bother me.

Now with shorts I was having the same problem as you, but after a whole one day, I got used it haha. I was trying to think of all the different options, slip, bandana, some seriously ingenious things others here have told me about, but I found that carrying it loose really isn't all that bad(to me). I do tend prefer a lighter traditional in shorts, though.

You can get different sizes- the knife I carry is a 3.75 inch trapper type, I think it could accommodate a 4 inch knife pretty easily as long as it wasn't too wide or thick. Check Etsy.

If it has a lanyard hole you can go with a suspension clip, or you could go with a smaller knife.
Smaller knives can turn sideways all they want and not get uncomfortable.

Thanks for all the suggestions!! I usually carry a more modern knife with a pocket clip which eliminates this issue (obviously). I think I may just continue to toss my traditionals in my RFP and just get used to them falling where ever they fall. Great pics too, lots of cool traditionals and hybrids!!! Thanks again everyone.

Yeah J Jordan@DLT but folks round here don't take kindly to pocket clips :p

For me it depends on the knife and what I do or don't have in my pocket as to how it carries best I will say universally a standard vertical carry works almost every time. I do find slips help keep it vertical as well protect the knife from other objects in the pocket. I will say a trick I have seen before is to stitch a divide at the base of the pocket about 1 inch in length to hold the knife upright in the pocket.

For me it can depend on the knife and the pants. I carried a Trapper in my pocket for years until one day it bothered me. I think now the biggest knife I carry in my pocket is a Victorinox Pioneer, and it ends up horizontal in the bottom of my jeans pocket, but it doesn't bother me. Bigger knives I carry on my belt.

I am personally a fan of many the modern traditionals even those that to me are far more modern than traditional such as the Kizer Zip-Slip and the Hinderer XM-Slippy

Agreed, I'd call those particular models more modern slipjoints than modern traditionals. The modern traditionals try to keep similar to an old pattern, a modern slipjoint just does what it wants.

I carry a small thin, aluminum panel SAK for opening mail and small tasks in the left front pocket. I carry a SAK centurian on my right side in a cloth benchmade sheath. A benchmad Casbah clipped in the right front pocket along with a small pistol. Everything fits well, everything is comfortable. I used to carry around a multi tool but I thought it was too heavy. I'm happy with what I've got going now.

My S&M stag sowbelly rides in my LF pocket every day 12 months out of the year. I never liked the feel of a sheath or slip, so it just flops around in my pocket, which doesn't bother me. I like the easy access to grab it quickly, or to thumb the stag while I'm thinking.

I carry most of mine loose in the pocket. They get the key-wash look, but it gives the handle a patina to match the blade.
I have one or two that get carried in a leather slip sheath, but I find it inconvenient to take them out of the sheath for use. Prefer just loose.

I wear a certain brand of flex firehose cargo pants(from a company in Minnesota) the right from pocket has an internal veritcal pocket sewn in. It works really well for knives, and if a flashlight is needed, the knife rides beside it vertically.
