How to carry Benchmade Mini Griptilian safely?

So...i carry my handgun without any worry as it is tucked away nicely in a holster.

I've been leaning towards a fixed blade EDC knife as I felt more comfortable carrying a knife in a sturdy sheath as well. Well after much searching I found most carry folding knives not fixed blade. So I went with the Benchmade Mini Griptilian.

I understand how the mechanism works on this knife to keep it closed. I understand that I need to keep it against the seem of my pocket to keep it shut.

I am very concerned the knife will open when I dont want it to.

How do I mitigate for this risk? Have knives like this "come open" on you?

I like the knife but I'm getting concerned I made an impulse buy that I won't be comfortable carrying and should have went with a fixed blade.

I think you're overthinking this, honestly. Do you know how many members here carry a Mini Grip every single day and have never had the knife just spring open in their pocket? Hint: hundreds of members.

Come on, now.

Put it in your pocket and feed it regularly.

Benchmade does offer a belt sheath for about $15-20. If carried clipped to a pocket, it is very unlikely that you will get bit.

I agree with the others. Don't over think this. If a tip up knife is carried against the seam, it can't open. Add in the fact that the Axis Lock has a bias for closing and there is nothing to worry about.

Hey BC. It's highly unlikely that it will open unintentionally. I hike, bike, jog etc. with mine and its never happened. Good choice in folders. Enjoy!

Once you get the knife, see how small it is and try carrying it you'll quickly realize there is very little risk involved in carrying a small manual folder. If I were you I would be more concerned with your gun accidentally going off.

Appreciate the responses. I'm into guns way more than knives so yes I might be asking a question that seems ignorant to many of you.

I'm not a worry but I am a thinker. I carry a loaded handgun with a round in the chamber with no issues. It is secure in a holster that properly covers the trigger and it takes an intentional effort to draw the gun and take the safety off.

I suppose that's the level of comfort I'm looking for with a carry knife as well. It certainly sounds like its not a common issue.

1) Tighten the pivot down with a power drill.
2) Wrap duct tape around the entire knife.
3) Put it into a sheath then sew it shut.

Never going to open now. But seriously it won't open even if you dropped it, unless it landed at the correct angles and speed to open it slightly.

Clip it to the corner of your pocket with the spine touching the seam, so there is no possible way for it to open in your pocket.

Knives don't just fly open in your pocket. The only knives I've had open in my pocket were flippers with weak detents carried with the tip up.

You know those pocket holsters for spare magazines?

A mini grip would fit in one perfectly.

If it's not falling open when you are holding it it won't open in your pocket. I carry mine in gym sorts mostly not clipped and it has never happened and I have never heard of it happening to anyone else either. I wouldn't worry about it.

The Benchmade barrage family has a lock on the spine of the knife that keeps the axis lock from disengaging both in the closed and open position, in fact most non-kershaw/zt assisted openers seem to have a secondary lock. I understand that you may not want an assisted knife, but thats the easiest way to get a secondary safety. As you and others have said as long as the blade spine is riding towards the seem of your pocket its not going to open, Ive even carried benchmades for over a decade tip up in my right rear pocket and never had one open in my pocket, though im sure its a matter of time and ive been dodging that bullet for a long time now

Only time I have ever had a blade open in my pocket was when I carried one without the blade against a seam. Carry it right and just like your firearm there should be no need for concern.

As mentioned above, change pocket clip position so it on your strong side (or preferred side, since you carry a pistol as well) and so the blade is parallel and against the seam of your pocket.

If it still worries you, some companies offer a secondary lock to keep it closed...usually means its also an assisted opening knife which may not meet ones needs. If that is appealing, look into a bench made barrage/mini barrage or a Kershaw leek, scallion, or chive.
Kershaw leek has a kydex neck sheath available too coupled with the secondary lock to keep it closed is a great, safe alternative method of carry, IMO

I agree with mrdabble. If you're truly concerned that the knife will open you can get the mini barrage which has a safety locking feature to 1. Keep the blade shut 2. lock the blade open if needed.

Never had an axis lock open in my pocket, and I have more than a few. :)

No worries, carry and enjoy.
