How to chose a hand crafted knife?

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me. We are getting my husband a knife for his birthday. He has a relatively small collection of knives and would love a hand crafted one. It doesn't have to be custom made. We are hoping to surprise him with a good one.

So what should I be looking out for? How do you pick a knife maker to purchase from? Recommendations online etc? If you were buying it what helps you decide?

I want to ensure its good quality. I think it will be a folding one we will get as they require more skill. And it is mainly folding knives that he has already.

There are a few of us chipping in for this so not fully sure what our spending amount is yet. But the knife maker we chose may decide this also :)

Look here too - these are folders currently for sale by BF knife makers - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/753-For-Sale-Folders

UPDATE - Check this out as an example of an excellent folder, at a good price, by a well respected BF knife maker. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1332038-Locking-Liner-EDC

See what you like - read the comments - go to the maker's web site or face book page to gather more info. Their FEEDBACK SCORE - as seen in the upper right of their post will add to their credibility but not exclusively. Some of these guys sell through many other venues.

Difficult to recommend any particular maker. Better to choose several knives and then study a bit. Don't wait too long if you see something you really like - they could be sold in a blink.
Of course you can then always contact the maker to commission a custom . Plan on 2 to 3 months (at least) if you are asking for a custom.

There is also this sub-forum http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/748-For-Sale-Custom-Knives-(Individual) BUT - wading through these options can be very difficult. Still you might get some ideas.

Have fun :) There are some great options out there.

Yep, check the Blademakers for sale area.

I've gotten some awesome blades at a price way below what they're worth.

You will find lots of makers with skills that rival the big names, but since their name isn't big, it doesn't have a big price tag. They're building their name still.
