How to clean a DMT stone?

Soft or distilled water with a pinch of baking soda seems to float swarf away from the stone and edge, too. Tried that two nights ago (prepping for use on waterstones that were developing hard water scale) and was quite surprized that so much more crud was floating away than with water alone.
