How to clean a sleeping bag .

Thanks Alberta Ed , I never heard of a liner . I,ll check them out . I give off a lot of heat and so I don,t need much in the way of heat retention . It will at least help to keep the bag clean .

I have the current issue 3 piece military sleeping bag which I just pulled out. It was stored compressed. There was a coating of white mildew on it. I put it in the washer twice and it came out nice and clean.

Down Soap (search REI or you local brick and mortar store)

Commercial front load gentle

No top-loading machines!!!

Dry with a pair of clean sneakers. breaks up down clumps and builds up a little static electricity to fluff up the down. (Yeah, that last part about static electricity sounds bogus to me too, but it's what I was told, and by God, it works like a champ!)

I've got an old (1977!) North Face Superlight that's going strong, and I've washed in just that fashion oh... 6-8 times...

Gad! no wonder it's a little funky!!!

I've washed down comfitters in the same way with excellent results.

I've never found a dry cleaner who knew how to safely wash down products!
