hey guys. just wondering the best way to keep a nice clean blade like my bushcraft 3V. not sure what to use to get any grease stains and smudges off the blade, i don't want to ruin the finish in any way. the "out of the forge" finish that the bushcraft blade has is really beautiful. so, any tips on how to keep my new knife in tip-top condition? particularly the 3V and green micarta. thanks again for any help in advance.
man, i love this knife!

I keep mine lubricated with Mil-Tec oil to prevent staining. Warm water and soap will do a great job taking off most grease. It will remove the oil from your hands you've imparted on your handle though. Make sure to dry it off before you put it away.

I keep a coat of Briwax on it (and the handle) and then just hit it with mineral oil now-and-then to keep it lubed. The Briwax lasts a very long time when done this way.

If you do get rust (happens to me too)...just hit it with a scotchbrite pad (same one you'd use in the kitchen) and recoat the wax/oil.

yes - on the blade. It is a great rust-preventative. Was tested in Blade magazine and came out on top by a long shot.

Is Briwax a special order item or common in Lowe's, Wal-Mart, etc?
I haven't seen it around.

you can get it at woodcraft.com (or in one of their retail stores).

I've been putting mine in the sink and using Dawn Dishwashing liquid and one of the non abrasive scrubbers and then letting it drip dry in the dish drainer.

cool, but i don't know if i'd chance it with mine. i think i'll pick up some briwax though. thanks guys.

i have a greasy smudge on the blade that is more shiny than the rest of the blade. is there something that can fix this, or should i clean with soap? i am not sure what it is, but it won't come off no matter how hard i rub it with a cloth. what about something like TUFF cloth? is there something like soap but definitely safe for 3V? thanks again.

What exactly would be chancey about washing a blade off in water and soap??

I can see how rust would be prevented by waxing the blade, but I'm missing how waxing the blade would remove dirt or grease.

no, you are correct. I am going to use soap for the grease and the wax for the rust. Thanks for all the help. would there be a "best" soap to use. I think you said dishwasher soap, but any advice to which one? thanks again

If you have one in 3V with as-forged flats, you can hit it with a scotchbrite pad and scrub it good. :D

Hot, soapy water works great - I wash my blades here in the shop several times before they get to you guys....and let them drip-dry all the time. ;)
(no rust)

Your local supermarket will have them. Walmart will have them too. Look for a green scratchy pad, sometimes on one side of a sponge.

From playing with my 3V/green canvas micarta Bushcraft this past week, you couldn't hurt it with a scotchbrite pad if you tried. Get that knife clean!

Then dirty it up again!!!!

Yep - hardware store has 'em too...even dollar stores!

:D

hey, i just got done with the soap and water, and i can still see the smudge. it seems as if it might be part of the finish. the flats are the beautiful "out of forge" look, but there is a small shiny part on one side of the blade where maybe the buffer hit it too hard or something. i kind of like the look of it though. it is very small, but anything else i can try? thanks.
