I had some old whitetail antler that I was about to pitch but I decided to try something first. I made tea in a coffee can with eight teabags. In went the horn and out on the back porch it went. I promptly forgot all about it for about two weeks. The horn looked REALLY good, a rich, deep brown and with a loose buff and some white compound looked even better. Non-toxic, good looking and free. I will definitely try it again when someone says they want moose antler scales on their knife. Now I'm off the the local rendering plant to get some cattle shin bones to do the same. Jigged bone has a really unique look. I'll post the results, if I remember

Antler can be dyed. I don't think horn can be, but I don't know everything. Which do you have?

Horn can be bleached in hydrogen peroxide.
I wasn't aware that Opinels were made in horn.

Hi Frank,

I am gonna answer me own question. I just used shoe leather paint and it did the job just right.

What exactly did you use? Can you post a pic?

Somebody else who wants to dye horn is bound to find this thread sooner or later.

Shoe tinture, the stuff that you use to put some color back into shoes once they get tatty. Went strait into the horn and gave it a nice rich tone.

There are a lot of things for putting some color back into shoes -- different brands of dyes, paints, and waxes. The next person to come along would like to know exactly what you used.

Yes, I would like to know-because horn is pretty impermeable.
