I was looking for a more reasonable blade length line 8 or 9". Any suggestions so I don't ruin the heat treat?

I wonder if this doesn't belong in the Maintenance, Tinkering & etc forum.
That aside, I would use a cut off wheel in a Dremel tool. Keep a can of water to dunk the blade in to keep it from getting too hot.
A good rule is to not let the area being cut (or ground) get too hot to touch.
A small grinding wheel, followed by good quality wet-or-dry sandpaper would finish the job.

That salmon slicer length is perfect IMHO. why don't you like the long length? You can get super clean cuts with the blade, and it is cheap to boot!
