How to cut scales from blocks?

Hola. I think I know the answer, but I am not too handy around power tools and my high school didn't offer woodshop. Anyway, I have some great desert ironwood, cocbolo, and curly koa blocks and need to cut them to scales from 1/8" thick to 1/4". I imagine the way to do it would be to set up a jig of some type (or, as Norm Abrams would say, a "fence?") to keep the block squared to the blade and use a bandsaw? Any tips and protocols would be tres appreciated!

Go to Sears or your local shop and ask for a miter box. They can be used with a hand saw, and they usually have measurements on them for uses just such as yours. They're great for jigging. Once you see one, you'll know what I mean.

The bandsaw works fine.Just square up the fence.I use a 2"piece of angle. Make sure the blade runs true with the fence.Check it with some pine.

Very few bandsaws will resaw wood exactly straight to the blade. Set you fence and make a cut in some scrap, and watch which direction the blade wants to pull the material. DON"T fight the blade.... just adjust your fenvce to the direction of the pull, and try some more scrap cuts. Keep making small adjustments until you have the fence in synch with the blade pull... and then cut your slabs or scales. Good Luck!
