How to deal with MREs...

3600 calories? i eat that for breakfast.........never mind the rest of the food i eat all day.......

of course i have the metabolism of a hummingbird on crack......

I suffer from an equally turo-fied metabolism. I can eat my own weight in butter and not gain a pound. My fiancee hates me for it. :D

those heater suck, they work half of the time. the best thing to do is eat them cold. the spaghetti is pretty good cold.
trade the Peanut butter for some jelly. mix a little water with the drink mix powder to make a paste and make a lemon spread for your crackers.
avoid the cheese.. unless you like farting all night.
don't eat the eggs.
corn beef and hash is pretty bad.
save all of your Tabasco bottles from other MRE's in case nobody wants to trade you for the corn beef and hash.
other lessons learned, make sure you save your spoon when you are done. I have had a spoon break while eating. (that super sucks)
save your chocolate for when you get cold. eat it at night so that you burn calories while you sleep to warm up. same thing with drinking the Tabasco.

an old marine buddy of mine sent me this website link awhile ago, check it out.

How I dealt with MRE's: Tobasco and stool softener.

I liked the cheese but the peanut butter was only good for fuel to make the heat tabs last longer.

+1  Most of the time I'd have rather had a MRE than eat in the Chow Hall.

Of course they killed off the best meal long ago....Meatballs in BBQ Sauce.

They did kill the best one long ago... but it was the dehydrated pork patty.

MRE eggs + cheese + Tabasco is pretty good. The scrambled egg MRE didn't come with the cheese, though.

Eh....the pork patty was OK but not the best IMO.

As an aside there was a guy in my Company who would trade his entire MRE for an Orange Nut Cake. Needless to say if I got a meal with one I was looking him up quick.

Personally, I never ate heated MREs. I was Navy, but.... well, long stories. The marines sometimes "borrow" squids for this and that.

In Iceland, we just... didn't heat them (summertime, it was like 55 degrees outside all the time! Heat? hell no- we were sunbathing on ops) In the middle east... well, get real.

I actually enjoy the damned things. Not the 3000 year old matzo, but the rest I find pretty appealing. Been a few changes since my time, menus and methods. (I don't even recall portable heaters being issued, certianly weren't any in the bag) I liked the BBQ stuff- pork, beef, goat? who knows? and the ham steak, delicious!

Never had a problem eating them, but the sideways trick is a good one to remember

Another thing about the heaters is that the gas the give off should not be inhaled. Always heat them outside or in a well ventilated area.

Also some surplus stores sell a civilian version of the MRE. I have had them and they are not the same as the Issue ones. Just something to be aware of.

I never liked the hotdogs. That meal was a joke. A hand full of small dogs and an even more pathetic bag of "patato chips". When I first went in we still had the dark brown bags and the tan ones came out towards the end. To this day I still enjoy lemon pound cake whether it is from the MRE or the bakery. I also liked the freeze dried pear wafer.

Man, those pound cakes are the shiz.
I also love the "wheat snack bread" -- much better than the crackers that everyone goes ga-ga over.

My favorite old meal was the chicken a'-la king. Lot of guys didn't like it, but I did.

I'm one of those weird people that really loves MREs.

Me too. When you're hungry enough from training anything tastes good. Once when we had box lunches I dropped a chicken leg on the tarmac but it didn't stop me from eating it, sand, gravel and all. I joined the Marines on a weight waiver (133 lbs. at 6'1" tall) and left boot camp at 165 lbs. MRE's and the Chow hall did me good.

I haven't noticed a stench with the newer, no-residue, ones. But I forgot to mention I do seem to get about 1 in 4 duds, meaning they never activate and heat up.

yep same here..

i like MRE's i have a few around the house for camping trips mainly. i had some that were in my closet for a few years so i ate them.. not too bad. the hot sauce was dried up though.... damnit
