How to develop a thick skin?

Go through a 4 year apprenticeship in your local ironworkers union....that'll cover both skin thickening needs ;) There is no need for me to know what burning flesh smells like, but I do :barf:

Do like some martial artists do and strike against a hard object (such as trees, bamboo, etc) several hours a day. It'll hurt, but the conditioning will toughen your skin (and bones) up by a hell lot. I somtimes condition my knuckles by punching against wood from old computer desks, made from particle board, but still causes my knuckles to hurt for a few days and I have a few scars to prove it. I can now punch through small branches about 1 and a half to 2'' thick without noticing any pain. I sometimes do it in my school during VME, when we go outside anyway. (Vehicle and mobile equipment) If you do this, start small though, which means dont start striking stuff like bricks right away.

I play guitar to toughen my fingers. As far as a mental skin goes, Who cares what they think, as long as i'm on the proper side of the law. and I love it when a customer cusses me out in my day job. I've found these qoutes to be for the most part ... true

"Profanity is the attempt of a lazy and feeble mind to express itself forcefully."

"Profanity is the use of strong words by weak people."

"Profanity is a crutch for the conversationally handicapped."

"When a man uses profanity to support an argument, it indicates that either the man or the argument is weak - probably both."

Realize that while people have the right to speak freely, there is no compulsion to listen to them. You want think skin, work as an LEO. But understand that people that want to be respected need to treat others that way. There are a lot of trolls on BFC, but that doesn't mean that you need to let them bother you. Listen for the good advice or info, ignore the bad or foolish, and go forward.

At the end of the day, your conscience should be clear and what you have accomplished has been by the work of your hands, not the words of someone's mouth.

Only you can allow someone get under your skin.

I seem to remember in the old movies fighters would soak their fists in buckets of water with brine to make them tufffer. Try a Google on it. Don't confuse dry with tuff. and you might need tuff wrists too, so if the soak works... go up to the elbows :D:D

If ya mean real skin, cuts, bruises, 50 gritted knuckles or fingertips or hot steel heated hands/fingers don't hurt as much as the arthritis anymore, so I don't concentrate on the real skin injuries...thicker doesn't do much for cut through skin, thick or thin.
As for the figurative "thick skin" when someone speaks ill of you or mean to you, actually I don't have that kind of thick skin, I just will try to keep from showing that.

Try being a school teacher for building thick skin... Everybody is an expert on education, they've all been to school.
