How to edc a small fixed blade?

Surprisingly little discussion on this subject...

Being in NYS, where carrying a folder runs the risk of being arrested for having a 'gravity knife', I am going to start carrying a small fixed blade.

After receiving lots of help on another thread, I have narrowed down my choice of knife (or rather knives, you know how it is... :D) and it seems that I will be carrying a thin (possibly skeletonised) knife around 6" overall length.
I have bought a Meyerco Necklance for now because I'm broke until payday, and I've been trying out various ways of carrying it with limited success.
I found that IWB carry tended to place the knife so far down that I risked cutting off a love handle, or, if placed higher, either dug into me or jutted out when sitting.

So, all you seasoned fixed blade carryers, how do you carry your knife, or what suggestions do you have for me?

Here's a list of things to consider:

It is important that the knife is concealed.

I usually wear jeans and an untucked shirt.

I'm 6' tall and of average build, except that I have a beer gut, which precludes most forms of carry that involve the front of my pants :D

No neck or boot carry, as this may be interpreted as 'weapon' rather than 'utility' (and also would make accessing the knife difficult in the case of boot carry).

I'd prefer something IWB if possible, but I have yet to find a way that doesn't show or dig into me when I sit or abrade my torso when I walk.

I'm prepared to make/modify a sheath.

Any suggestions?

If i had to carry a concealed knife i'd clip it inside my pants at the small of my back (over your butt). This is the same place i would carry a hand gun whether it's concealed or not. The natural curves of your body help hide the weapon/tool and if you mess up somehow you'll just cut some non essential tissue instead of your babymaker(s) or an artery.

i carry it inside my pants attached to my pants. i usually carry it just a little further back then my side but not over my butt. (i do this because then it goes along with the curve of my body and isnt noticeable) hope this helped!

I carry a BK14 or Scrap Yard Scrapivore inside my waist band on my right side. Those 2 knives are thin and light enough to not even know its there until you need it. Sometimes if im lazy i just toss it in a left pocket with the handle down.

If you have a kydex sheath look at a Spyderco G Clip for it.

I always carry my pocketknife clipped inside my RF jeans pocket. It's usually less than 3.5" but is legal to a 4" blade here in Florida.

I like a crossdraw myself

I'm sorry I'm about to go off topic just a bit, but do you live within the 5 boroughs of NYC? That's where the gravity blade laws apply. The rest of the state does not abide by the oppression of NYC District Attorney Vance.

Good ideas so far, keep 'em coming, I'm going to try each suggestion I get and see what works best for me.

I don't live in the 5 boroughs, I live in Nassau County on Long Island.
There are a lot of ex-NYPD cops here, so it's becoming a risk here too.
Until I can apply for citizenship in a couple of years, I'm a legal permanent resident, and a gravity knife arrest could possibly mean that I would be deported. I have a wife and kids, so it's just not worth the risk, it would kill me if I was separated from them.

I know the feeling..got rid of the folder too :). Really check out a good Kydex rig as can be thin, secure, and could be a little more accessible than some leather sheaths on about all points..you can carry many different sized fixed blades directly in your pocket...big thing will be what kind of pockets you have on your jeans..the more shallow, well, the less options you have..

Res1cue..that's a pretty cool set up you have, never thought to carry that way.

Here's my current pocket carry/EDC, (black kydex on the left) and works great for the khakis I wear, and in most Jeans, but there are a couple of pairs that the pocket is so shallow on..just doesn't work.

Good luck with your search.

8 o'clock IWB for my Izula. Conceals well and easily accessible with both hands for me.

I carry fixed either necker, or small of back handle down about 45 degrees (assuming sheath retention is pretty good).

FWIW (and off topic) I'd never concealed-carry my handgun at small-of-back (well, I do at home but that's a different matter) but in a critical situation, having to reach SoB (especially if it's concealed under long shirt or jacket) and sweep around to your shooting position wastes time and effort. Just ask Clint Smith: http://www.thunderranchinc.com/director.html

I have a bk11 that I carry on a steel chain that's wrapped through one of my belt loops (like a camera lanyard) and I carry tip down in my front right pokcket with the edge facing behind me. (Being of pretty much your smae build I think you could carry it in that way

I've bought a couple of knives from Alan Davis......a knifemaker on BF who makes FB and folders. He's 1 of a few that make both.

Alan made a horizonal leather sheath for the small, 7.75", fb I bought from him. Stag handle with hammerd finish blade.

+1...great guy, awesome knives and excellent prices. :D

I just bought a small fixed from Alan and really love the heavy leather, horizontal sheath that came with it. I'm a big guy myself and have found that the best carry for me is just left of center(around 10-11 o'clock position) pretty much the same as Res1cue's carry. My work attire is usually some jeans and an untucked shirt, so the knife is comfortably concealed(sitting or standing) while also easily accessible by either hand.

That is a good looking knife! How long is the blade? About 2.5"?

Thanks, the 52100 steel blade is 2 3/4" from tip to handle scales. The blade is ground very thin, .015 behind the edge, mirror polished and is hair splitting sharp. :D

You can go with a simple pocket sheath.

Sharpshooter Sheaths makes some nice pocket sheaths that are slim enough to suit your needs. As far as a small fixed blade goes, they should be able to handle the size of an Izula.

I'm partial to Bark River when it comes to fixed blades so I would recommend something like the City Knife, the Essential, the Little Creek, the Mini North Star, and of course the Bravo Necker.

I would recommend the Izula since it offers an incredible amount of carrying options with the default sheath. This is how I carry mine with a molle adapter, though a TekLok would be better for this... as the end of the molle adapter kind of pokes into my leg when I sit. Carrying it horizontally is great for me because I can put it underneath my gut and it doesn't bother me at all. Also keeps most of my clear of the knife.

The great thing about this is I can still put it in my pocket when I want too.

Anyway, not to make a huge case for the Izula, just the horizontal carry at a slight offset like so. I am a fan of the jeans and untucked shirt too. As you can see, it really doesn't print much at all, and I have more than just beer belly going on :P
