How to find local sources for steel and heat treating?

How should I go about finding local sources of good steel and heat treating services? I've talked to a few welding shops and hardware stores. I've only found mild steel though. I even spoke to a blacksmith but his coal forge was out of a commission for about 10 years.

Are welding shops and machine shops good places to inquire or should I just give up and use the mail?

If you find a supplier like Fastenal

You can find precision ground D2, O1

but Aldo has much more selection

If you want a local heat treater, check the Yellow Pages for Metal Heat Treating
but they may not deal with your steel type, or may have large minimums.

I just googled Fastenal.

So strange that I'd never heard of them before.

Good info., Thanks.
