I just had a great idea. Spyderco's BB lock has a going for it but it also has some drawbacks. Mainly, it is hard to use because you have to get your finger inside the side of the knife. Kind of a pain but I love how strong it is and it seems to be super smooth and strong. Also, every BB lock knife I have had has had great lock-up. I have noticed that many of the new Spydercos I have bought had blade play issues (Caly 3, Endura 4, "S", Para, ect).
The best lock system I have used is the Axis lock from Benchmade. It is the main reason I buy a few Benchmades instead of just Spydercos.
Here is my idea, make the Ball bearing lock protrude beyond the handle slabs so it is much easier to engage the ball bearings. It will act almost like an Axis lock yet will not infringe on BM's patents.
Just make the BBs either stick out both side or weld somethng on to them so your thumb can get a good hold on them without having to dig into the side of the knife. Lets face it, the Axis lock works really well and it is one of the few areas that Benchmade has an advantage over Spyderco in. I think the BB lock has the most potential out of all the locks Spyderco uses. The compression lock is okay but I have never seen anyone use one and be impressed by it like they are from one of the Axis locks on a BM.
It is just a simple idea but it would work great! So Sal, I am willing to give you this idea in exchange for one of the first knives you produce with the improved BB lock.
This could be a HUGE idea if it will work.
