How to fix the Perrin sheath?

Got myself a Perrin. Very nice knife. Balance is great making it fast in my hand. It immediately got into my EDC rotation.

The sheath...

Overall design (looks) is good. It rides very well on my belt but the sheath is too big for the knife (as many before me has reported). I would like to carry it differently but I can´t because it isn´t secure enough. I thought Perrin made fighting knives and not "garden knives" that you should have to pamper. The knife itself doesn´t have any problems (that I have noticed sofar) BUT together with a poor sheath it becomes a second rate defense product.

Does anyone have a quick fix (I read the quick fix TOTC posted) that explains how to change the Kydex (concealex) without adding stuff?

1. Can I heat it up with a hairdryer and press gently on the sheath to make it tighter? If so, where do I press? Along the back of the blade on the sheath or do I put pressure on the whole blade? Is it enough to do two or three indentions on the sheath in the middle of the blade instead of pressing the full length of the blade? Anyone out there that know one or two things about sheaths? (I´m quite handy).

2. Has anyone tried to heat and mold the sheath a bit more into the choil of the knife with good results retention wise?

The small "dots" that hold the knife are just... pitiful. Harsh words, sure. But I´d rather save 10 bucks and get a cheaper knife without a crappy sheath order one from Normark or any of the other great sheath makers out there.

Yeah, I could order one custom sheath directly but then I would feel ripped off one sheath. Not very logical but that is how I feel.

I used a heat gun to soften and pinch the very top of the sheath where it grips the choil. It didn't seem to make any difference. FWIW I carried the knife on a number of outings through the bush this summer and experienced no problems with blade retention. I sure wouldn't want to carry it upside down thouhg.

Send the knife back to Spyderco. Their customer service is great.

My Perrin may be one of the few that had a tight sheath. Still the quality of the sheath doesn't match the quality of the knife.

I used my iron last time I was fixing a kydex sheath. It worked just fine. Tightened it up, and took out the rattle.

Blades

The Perrin sheath has only one drawback in my experience which is lack of a lowprofile IWB option.
If you mean 'too big' as in 'too loose', I disagree. The last thing one needs to be messing with in an emergency is a tight sheath that won't let go. Kydex sheaths were originally more 'friction' retention oriented, as in there were no dots or hooking points, they just slid into the sheath with just enough drag to retain the blade and drew out smooth with no jerky motions(and almost no sound). So far the Perrin has been the only factory sheath outside the original BM Nimravus sheath that I really like.
FWIW, I carry mine in a defensive mode IWB, pakal grip draw.

take care,
Ken

Ken: yeah it's too bad that the mini-tek-lok makes the sheath practically IWB impossible.
I saw the blade, a tad small than I expected, but definately a good piece to have. I love the sheath and the retention is fine IMO, but I just couldn't stand the fact that it wouldn't do IWB...
Perhaps some measurements could allow Normark to form one of his multiposition belt loops that work great on his sheaths.

Hey Guys....

You can Always get me to make you new sheaths for it ..:)

IWB would be a simple matter for this blade...

Drop me a note if you have any questions..
