How to get a Heat Treat line....

OK,

How does one go about getting a heat treat line, not a hamon, just a heat treat line?

I think I have heard one does it by heating just the edge with a torch and quenching.

What problems can this create?

thats how i heat treat my knives and i havent had any problems. it takes a good eye to get the right color for the hardness you want. if you look at my website you can see the line you are talking about. some pictures i took show this better than others.

You can also get a line by heating the whole blade and only quenching the edge.
