Just take your steel sample and this form to your local fastenall. They will mail it off to the lab and you will have your results shortly. The cost is $75.00

Shawn, not yet. I plan to however. For some reason I can't seem to make the form big enough to read on the attachment....

I got some huge old saw blades for free that would make about 75 knives each. That is a buck a blade to know exactly what I'm dealing with. If you know somewhere cheaper let me know.

$75 seems a little pricy to me.

Seriously? Seems like you would already know what they were going to send back to you before you decided to send your steel off to a lab. By the way, is $75 really pricey for certified lab results from one of the most well-known distributors in the nation? I charge $75/HR for my expertise, one hour minimum and I'm not running a testing lab, nor do I have national recognition ;)

the price is relative to the amount of alloy you have on hand. $75 to ID a 20 lb bar is pretty expensive.

I dunno. A 20lb bar would make 30-40 decent sized knives if you're forging close to shape...Doesn't seem that bad to me...

Now, what I want to know is how Louis could misspell "Fastenal" when he had the form sitting in front of him... ;)

P.S. Yes, I know it's "analysis" too, but I didn't want to kick a man twice...oops...I did! J/K Louis ;)

you get back a COMPLETE list of alloying elements and stuff, I have done it and it is worth it. I had Aldo's steel analyzed by Fastenal (I work there) and the form you get back is very good.

I didn't know we did that in house...I'll have to look it up tomorrow when I'm there.

Hey "Mr. Fastenal", I've heard a rumor that there's a 5/16" Damascus
billet available at the Pt. Jervis branch.;)
