im almost finished with my christmass exchange knife, its my first bowie, and my first knife forged from actual bar stock, but my 5th overall. i did an edge quench and want to know how to get the temper line to appear when im done with it, and wanted to do it before i put the handles on. while its here, any comments on the blade shape? its only my 5th knife so im still not the best in the design area yet. thanks guys

its giving me errors for uploading my pic, so il add pics of the blade earlier, its strange im taking pics with the same camera i always use but the sights not accepting it today...

I'd mirror finish it or at least take it to about 1200 grit...then etch it in 1 part ferric chloride to 3 parts water

You left out the steel type?
We would need to know that to answer.

If thequench line (temper line is different thing) is there, it should show up as you reach finer grits in finishing.

Some general suggestions. Hand sand above 400 grit.
Sand in one direction only.
Etch with a mild etchant as you go. Lemon juice, or 10:1 FC
Give a final quick etch when done.
A last hand rubbing with red iron oxide ( mix some powdered rouge with light oil) will often really show the difference in the hard and soft steels.

Stacy, where do you get the red iron oxide? I haven't seen that knife making suppliers usually carry it.

I usually use Flitz or some other QUALITY metal polish and gently polish the blade after etching with polish on clean newsprint or I'll just polish around the "hamontemperquench line" with my thumb.

I haven't tried it yet but have been told that you can get some nice effects with warm vinegar or lemon juice brushed onto the line, takes multiple times but supposed to get some nice lines that way.

I meant the quench line, and im using some of aldos 1084, i would really love to upload pics, but its not letting me, some others are also having this problem on the service and support forum. thanks guys
