How to grind off D2 Scale?

I have started heat treating my D2 blades. I soak at 1880, in foil, sub zero quench, and temper at 950 and then 900. With the higher tempering temp I am getting a thick black scale that is a bear to grind off. Is there a better way to do this. The scale loads the living snot out of even a new 60 grit belt. I do not get this tempering at 400-500, but I swear at the higher temp, the blades are much tougher. Anybody have this problem? TIA

yes.. and i reuse an old ssfoil wrap for the tempering. problem solved!

or, if you are confident that the knife is straight after hardening just keep it in the same foil.
Yesterday i tested a blade hardened at 1050°C and tempered at 520°C, twice for 1 hr each, i got 62 hrc :)

Thanks! I will try that this weekend.

There is a great gain in toughness in the higher temper range, but a slight loss in hardness. I would think the specs given by JPuri would be somewhat lower in hardness, more like rc59. That is plenty hard, especially if the toughness is high.

I'd consider going straight to sub zero then a 4OO F range temper... from my testing this is a better heat treat for knives.

Other than that, try a used 36 grit belt! I like used belts or scale...

Stacy, i was aiming to that hardness becouse i'm gonna test some TiN PVD on it, and the company told me that i need a base hardness of 60 hrc..

i'll post once i have it done!

If you have some that you do need to descale, you can try pickling off the scale in a vinegar/salt solution overnight.
